    ---------------------------------------------------------
Thomas1, born in England abt 1585; departed Ipswich, England on ship "Francis" and arrived in New England in April 1634, with his first wife, Alice (last name unknown), and four children, Anna, age 14; Rose, age 11; Thomas2, age 10; and Rebecca, age 9. (Beware: This Thomas is called of Thomas of Fairfield. There was also a Thomas of Stratford, same area and same era, and much confusion arises when researching the descendants of the two Thomases).

Isaac2 was son of Thomas1 (of Fairfield) and his second wife, Mary (last name unknown). Isaac2 and wife Elizabeth Jackson had 7 children. Your David was child #6.

Information posted to GenForum by Sue Sherwood Arnett on 4/4/99 states parents of Thomas1 were Esdras and Dorcas Sherwood, who lived in St. Nicholas, Ipswich parish from 1580-1606.

From WWW.Genforum.com Sherwood Forum #190 by Robert Lepper Sr. on 10/22/98:

Thomas Sherwood was one of the seventeen original settlers of Fairfield, Connecticut, having immigrated in 1634 aboard the ship Frances, and passed through Boston, Weatherfield, and Stamford.

He served as a deputy in the General Court and as a committeeman. He fought in the Pequot War.

His name appears in several suits for slander as the plaintiff, two against Henry Graye and one against Jehue Burr, all of which he won. In the last he was awarded the sum of forty pounds, a very large sum for that time.

From the "Commemorative Biographical Record of Fairfield Co, CT. Vol 2" p. 800
"In the early history of England, during the days of "Robin Hood and LIttle John," Sherwood Forest, in Nottinghamshire, is frequently mentioned, and from the proprietors of that historic ground - Thomas Sherwood and his two brothers - are descended the Sherwoods of Fairfield county, Connecticut.
Thomas Sherwood, the progenitor of the American Sherwoods, came to Fairfield from England about 1650, prior to the organization of the town; tradition says one brother went East and the other West."

Thomas came over on the "Frances" in 1634 from England. The ship docked in Cape Cod.

While my Sherwoods are in VA, I believe they came from the Yorkshire area of England. I have several books on the area, and in one.."Visitaions of the North, 1560-1561", there is a pedigree on SHERWOOD:
Ralph SHERWOOD of Nottinghamshire..had son John SHERWOOD, md a female SHERWYN (from Stelyngton in Yorkshire) and had William, Thomas, and Isabel. Wiliiam was the only one with issue, and so:
William SHERWOOD, (called Customer of Newcastle upon Tyne? in 1559), md as his second wife, a female PENNYMAN of Normandby, Yorkshire. William's wifes and issue are printed in Dugdales' Visitations of 1666, which is printed in Foster, "Northumberland Visitations" page 113. One of the children of this William was another William, who was apprenticed to a Christopher ELMER in 1586, as his father was deceased. Your Thomas may have been a child of the first William, so I suggest you check the above book I mentioned.

Raygena, The groop sheets by Donald Notley are very good, you can see them on LDS micro film. Also Families of Old Fairfield is good, have used as proof for DAR. Actually Thomas Sherwood b.1586 in Ipswitch, England, came to this country with his first wife Alice Seabrook and some of his 8 Children. She died in childbirth of last child and he remarried Mary Fitch and had 6 more children, many of whom settled in upstate NY. I met a woman in the next town related to the second wife. I am related to the first wife. Also, if you want to have some fun, go to an LDS center and to back thru Thomas's family in England. I went back to the year 20! Have fun! Pat

    >Hi Phil,
    >I saw your letter to Joanne on the Sherwood list. I have been corresponding
    >with Joanne thru e-mail re our common (I think) Sherwood line. My Thomas
    >Sherwood emigrated from England on April 21, 1634, embarking from Ipswich
    >to Boston with his wife Alice Seabrook and their four younger children.
    >This is according to Grenville MacKenzie and others here in the US. My
    >family records are scanty but do indicate that at least some of my
    >ancestors were from Kent. My g-grandfather writes ca 1870: "English descent
    >from Kent, England, Moses Ward and Nancy Ward, daughter of Jobe Sherwood
    >and Polly Sherwood.
    >she was the daughter of a Drake." (He doesn't mean that Moses, etc. came
    >directly from England, but that they descended from people from Kent). If
    >you have any documented info on this line, I would certainly appreciate it.

I do not think one can assume that the maiden name of Thomas' first wife, Alice was SEABROOK ! See the article below by Jura Sherwood. I am still waiting to hear from Joanne what evidence she has that Thomas was born & married in Otham, Kent. The parish registers for Otham may be searched at the Centre for Kentish Studies in Maidstone. An alternative candidate for the marriage of Thomas is: 21 October 1604 at Ipswich, Suffolk: Thomas SHERWOOD m. Alice GILLIT (see IGI)

There were of course several Sherwood families living in Kent from 1500 onwards, but I have not found a Thomas that fits.

    Good Hunting,

THE THREE 17th CENTURY THOMAS SHERWOODS OF CONNECTICUT

In response to Geoff Sherwood's article in the last "The Sherwood
Forest", I'd like to clarify a few points and perhaps put to rest once
and for all, the confusion concerning the three men named Thomas Sherwood
who lived in Connecticut in the mid 17th century. Two we know, were
father and son, the third one's origins remain a mystery, but he was
definitely not the same man as Thomas, Jr. son of the immigrant Thomas
Sherwood, nor was he the grandson, as has been suggested by some.
I'll begin with Thomas Sherwood born about 1585. We can deduce this by
his age given as 48 years in the list of passengers who embarked from
Ipswich, Suffolk, England on the "Francis" the last day of April 1634,
arriving at Boston, Massachusetts in June 1634. Traveling with him were
his wife Alice, age 47 years and four children, Anna (called Hannah in
some later records), age 14, Rose 11, Thomas 10 and Rebecca 9. The
family didn't stay long in Boston. Thomas went with the first settlers
in 1635 to Wethersfield, Connecticut where he sold land to George Wyllys
in March 1640. This was probably about the time that Alice died and he
then married Mary. Their son Stephen was born about 1641. In 1648
Thomas sold out to John Holly and settled in Fairfield, Connecticut where
he remained until his death. His will dated 21 July 1655 was proved 22
Oct 1655. (Invoice of estate of Thomas Sherwood, Sr. taken 7 Sep 1655 -
Probate Records of Fairfield County). He names his son and six daughters
by his "first wife" as Jane, Tamsen, Margaret, Anna (Hannah), Thomas,
Rose and Rebecca. His will further says "to my loving and well beloved
wife Mary Sherwood", and names his children Mary, Stephen, Matthew,
    Abigail, Ruth and Isaac.
Before we leave Thomas Sherwood (referred to as Sr. in his probate),
let's set the record straight about his two wives and determine, once and
for all, that their last names have never been found.
Alice, who was 47 in 1634 must have been born about 1587. She was not,
nor could she have been the daughter of Robert Seabrook and his wife
Alice Goodspeed. The marriage between Robert Seabrook and Alice
Goodspeed is recorded in the parish registers of Wingate,
Buckinghamshire, England 12 Sep 1596. Alice Goodspeed was baptised 19
Aug 1576, the daughter of Nicholas Goodspeed, Jr. and Margaret his wife.
There can be little doubt that Alice, the wife of Thomas Sherwood, Sr.
was born nine years before Robert Seabrook married Alice Goodspeed who
was then 20 years old. Robert was an early settler of Stratford,
    Connecticut. (Stratford is significant here.)
An old Fairfield Deed dated 18 Jan 1658 states "John Banks hath married
Mary Sherwood the relict." Here it should be confirmed that she was NOT
Mary Fitch. Records show that giving her that name was a slip of the pen
by a woman writing a Sherwood history. It is unfortunate that this has
been recorded by subsequent "genealogists" so often that it is accepted
as fact. The truth is, Mary's son by Thomas Sherwood, Captain Matthew
Sherwood, married Mary Fitch daughter of Thomas Fitch of Norwalk,
Connecticut as his second wife. Her gravestone records her age as 87
when she died 25 Dec 1730, making her birth about 1644 (Thomas Sherwood,
Sr. and his second wife, Mary had children of their own by then).
Thomas Sherwood, Jr., son of Thomas and Alice, married four times. His
first wife was Sarah Wheeler, daughter of Thomas Wheeler. She died
before 1659 when he married Ann Turney, daughter of Benjamin Turney. He
married third Elizabeth the widow of John Cable. His fourth wife was
Sarah, the daughter of Humphrey Hide and widow of Peter Coley. These
marriages are well documented, the last with an agreement dated 24 June
1695. Thomas Sherwood, Jr. died soon after this marriage. His inventory
    was dated 12 Mar 1698.
This brings us to Thomas Sherwood of unknown origins who lived and died
in Stratford, Connecticut. He married before 1642, Sarah Seabrook who
was born about 1623 to Robert Seabrook. In 1657 she is mentioned as
being 34 years old with a son named John age 4 and an unweaned child.
(Even with today's modern medical miracles, this would have been
    impossible for Alice!)
According to the Stratford records dated 1 Jan 1657, Thomas Sherwood is
mentioned as "Having departed this life", His will dated 4 Jun 1657 names
his wife Sarah, sons John and Thomas (under 18), dau. Mary. His other
daughter, Elizabeth is not mentioned by name in his will. That these
children of Thomas Sherwood were the grandchildren of Robert Seabrook can
be confirmed by consulting the Stratford Deeds where mention is made of
    gifts "from Grandfather Robert Seabrook."
The three wills of the three Thomas Sherwoods are clear that Thomas Sr
died in 1655, his son Thomas died in 1698 and Thomas of unknown origins
    died 1657. What's the confusion?
The information regarding the Sherwoods of Suffolk, England that Geoff
Sherwood quoted, came from an article entitled "Connecticut Ancestors of
Bergen Chapter Members (DAR) 1938 by Mrs. Ella Sherwood. I found this
article in the Daughter's of the American Revolution Library about twenty
years ago, when I lived in the Washington, D.C. area.
I attempted to find the sources Ella Sherwood used for her conclusions by
consulting the Suffolk parish records. The only ones I could confirm
were: Thomas, baptized 1 Jan 1541 (not 1540 as she states,) at St.
Nicholas, Ipswich. No parents names were given. I also found the
baptisms of Edras and Dorcas' children Xfoper (Christopher) 20 Mar 1586
and Dorcas 7 Jul 1588, both at St. Nicholas, Ipswich.
Twenty five years ago when I began doing genealogical research, I set my
goal as identifying all of my husband's immigrant ancestors. With
exception of the two wives of Thomas Sherwood the 1634 immigrant, and
three other women whose surnames I cannot determine, I've achieved my
goal. Below are some of the sources I've used to reach my conclusions on
the Sherwood research. I hope others will continue the
search for Thomas, Alice and Mary's roots.

inclosing a page with the start of the Sherwoods in America and we all
are descendants from Thos. S. who came from Ipswick, England in 1634 to
    Fairfield Conn.
I don't know about Ann Babcock only as you see "Ann B" is mentioned as
the wife of Thomas Sherwood, and wheather that is your ancestor I am
unable to say, as they might in copying get the names changed.
I have quite a collection of family histories of different branches of
the family, an am interested in keeping this history, and if you have
any records would like to have them.
Dr. Bradford W. Sherwood 1441 South Salina St. Syracuse N.Y. my double
second cousin, has given me quite lot of history that he has geathered
and he now has a copy of mine of the "English Sherwood History" that was
sent to me by Mr. Sherwood who is Asst. Sec'y of the C. of C. of
Portsmouth, N. H. it runs back to the Bishop of Durham during the reign
of Richard III, the name was Sherwodie then and they of course were
Catholic at that time. This line is brought down thru all the line
including our common ancestor Thos. S. who came here in 1634. A Sherwood
married a daughter of Gov. Bradford of Mass. and that is where that name
comes into the family, as you will see my Gt. Gd-fathers name was
Bradford. You may find what you wish to know by looking in the book,
"Conn in the Revolution." If there is any thing I can help you with
about the S. history advise me. Very Sincerely,
    (signed) R. H. Sherwood
