Douglas had three sons and a daughter in the 1840's. He married Martha Matilda Collins in 1858, but they had no children. In 1873, he married Charlotte Richards, and they had a daughter Eleanor, before she died in 1876. In 1877, he married Charlotte's sister, Ida in Adelaide, and they had four sons, and four daughters.

Migrated to Van Diemen's Land aboard the "Louisa Campbell", arrived 1839; with brother Henry pastoral licence of Cameron's Run, nr. Romsey, Port Philip district, 1839--40; elected to Legislative Council 1855; Mayor of Launceston 1865--6 qne 1880--2; Premier of Tasmania 1884--6; first Agent General 1886; President of Legislative Council 1894-1904. Founder of Douglas & Collins, solicitors, Launceston, Tasmania. Knight Bachelor 1902, introduced railways into Tasmania, and took a leading part in Australian Federation.
