"GEORGE WASHINGTON AND MARY HANNA (DOUGLAS) BURK
George Washington Burk was born in Montgomery County on June 9, 1859.He was the son of John Franklin and Martha Rebecca (Reath) Burk. Hisfather was killed in the Civil War near Kingston, GA in May of 1864,leaving him and his three surviving siblings in the care of theirmother and the support of their father's Civil War pension.
"Wash," as his friends called him, grew up without the benefit offormal education, making his mark on the world through a strongHoosier work ethic. He was a quiet man who was what was known as atenant farmer, working different land around the area."
He married Mary Hanna Douglas, daughter of Jeremiah and Martha Jane(Mitchell) Douglas, in Montgomery County on Sept. 3, 1884. From 1885to 1906, "Wash" and Mary Hanna brought 11 children into the world. They were Clara, John, Amanda, Martha, Pearl, Alice, Jerry, George,Cora, Bertha, and Bill. All were born in Brown Township, with theexception of Bill Burk, who came along during the family's brief stayin Russellville in Putnam County. His arrival, on Oct. 9, 1906,happened at a difficult time. Shortly before that day, his father, and sister, Martha, both came down with typhoid fever. "Wash"survived, but 16-year-old Martha did not. She died on Oct. 1, 1906,just eight days before the family welcomed the new baby.
Mary Hanna (Douglas) Burk was born on the dirt floor of her parents'log cabin in the area of Whitesville on May 12, 1864. Stories passeddown paint a classic picture of an uneducated, hard working, andwarm-hearted product of the 19th century.
Following the death of her husband "Wash" in Alamo on Dec. 21, 1939,she could often be found tending her garden at home, barefooted and inlong sleeves and bonnet to prevent sunburn. She had a knack forchildren. A crying baby would stop fussing almost immediately in MaryHanna's caring arms. Her home was loaded with antiques, including apump organ and an old Victrola crank-type record player.
In her old age, she wore false teeth, which she abhorred, and took outwhenever she ate! She was fond of sweet potatoes and enjoyed makingblackberry and raspberry jam. She loved bacon, too, and was sure todrain the grease from every batch, then soak it up with a big piece ofbread and eat it.
Despite her lack of education, she loved reading...mostly newspapersand the Bible. Grandchildren often saw her stooped over thescriptures, magnifying glass in hand, sounding out the larger words inher high-pitched voice. She stayed close to her beloved descendantsby often staying in the homes of her children for up to six weeks at atime.
When she died on Feb. 12, 1953, the first grandsons through each ofher children acted as pallbearers at her funeral in Wingate. MaryHanna's life had spanned the administrations of 18 Presidents, fromLincoln to Eisenhower. [Transcribed by, SLJuhl, 27 Oct 2005]

"JOHN FRANKLIN AND MARTHA REBECCA (REATH) BURK
John Franklin Burk, who came to Montgomery County in the late 1850's,was born in 1831 in Philadelphia, PA. He was one of the oldest in thelarge family of Jesse Burk, a stone mason, and his wife Elizabeth.
They left for New Jersey between 1836 and 1837, and then on to RedLion, DE. between 1837 and 1840. In 1842 they hopped over the borderinto Port Deposit, Cecil Co., MD, where they remained for a time.
In the spring of 1854, John Franklin Burk and Martha Rebecca Reath, daughter of William and Catherine (McKee) Reath, eloped. It is saidthat she tied several bedsheets together to steal away into the nightwith John. They made their way to Chester Co., PA where they weremarried on May 3, 1854."
Martha was born on Mar. 14, 1836, in Maryland. John and she had sixchildren, the first two dying as infants. They were William C. Burk,John Albert Burk, Joseph Nathaniel Burk, George Washington Burk,Samuel Smith Burk, and Mary Elizabeth Burk.
Sometime in the late 1850's, the Burk's located in Montgomery County, where John worked the land. Their home was about four amd a halfmiles from Crawfordsville (Indiana). It was a "staked homestead,"consisting of a three room house of simple construction, on one or twoacres of land. They had beds in the kitchen, living room, and "frontroom," as they called it.
On Dec. 28, 1863, at the height of the Civil War, John signed up withCompany "B" of the 120th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers inCrawfordsville. He mustered into the service in Lafayette on Jan. 30,1864.
Less than four months later, John Franklin Burk was dead. Accordingto his company captain, Charles W. Elmore, on Sunday, May 24, 1864,Private Burk "was driving a team in the supply train which was in therear of Sherman's Army when the train was attacked by rebels and hewas killed." The action took place at or near Kingston, GA. Hisfailure to return from the war created much confusion, as a neighbornamed Galey claimed that John Burk had been in the Confederates' LibbyPrison with him. It was four years before Captain Elmore's swornstatement, and a similar one signed by five of John's comrades, cleared up the matter. The testimonies were necessary so that Marthacould claim her husband's pension for her family.
Martha raised the four Burk children on her own following John'sdisappearance. She never remarried. The oldest child, JosephNathaniel Burk, and the youngest, Mary Elizabeth Burk, remainedsingle. George Washington Burk wed Mary Hanna Douglas, while SamuelSmith Burk exchanged vows with Martha "Mattie" Etta." Martha (Reath)Burk died on Aug. 23, 1909, at age 73." "JEREMIAH AND MARTHA (MITCHELL) DOUGLAS(S)
Jeremiah Douglas was born in Montgomery County, IN., May 28, 1832, thethird of the ten children of Jeremiah Douglas, a basket maker, andMary Catherine (Redenbaugh) Douglas. His grandfather, also namedJeremiah Douglas, lost an arm in the War of 1812. the family had cometo the area in the early years of Montgomery County from Scotland viaHinton, KY and Madison, IN. Jeremiah married Martha Jane Mitchell, inMontgomery County on Mar. 11, 1856. They were James Lewis Douglas (B.1857 - D. 1889) who married his cousin, Levina Catherine Douglas,Amanda Jane Douglas, who died unmarried at age 20 in 1878, Mary HannaDouglas (B. 1864 - D. 1953) who became wife of George Washington Burk, and Mariah Louella Douglas (B. 1872 - D. 1914) who married John J.Cox.
Jeremiah was a farmer well-known in early Montgomery County. Like hisfather he owned land a mile and a half east of Whitesville. This landwas sold in 1873, when Jeremiah, his wife, children, and parentsrelocated northwest of New Market. He passed away on June 28, 1907,at the age of 75 of stomach trouble and heart disease after havingbeen confined to his bed for six weeks prior to his death.
We get an interesting insight into the family history from a line inhis obituary. It reads, "For years the deceased lived in the hopethat he would share in a large fortune which was coming to the Douglasfamily from Scotland." No doubt this referred to the family legendthat Jeremiah's great-grandfather Douglas had been murdered the nighthe was to take over his inheritance...a family estate in Scotland.
Martha Jane's death came on Feb. 10, 1914. Interestingly, herdaughter, Mariah "Louella," who was living at the same home at thetime, died the very next day at the age of 42. Martha was just twoweeks short of 82 at the time of her passing." [Transcribed by,SLJuhl - direct descendant, on 27 Oct 2005]
