"John Cox Hartnell, was born in May 21,1834 in Chalden, Dorsetshire,England. He died September 12, 1916 in Salem, WI. He married ElizabethHarding on September 1, 1858, in Overmoigne, England. She was born in1834, and died November, 1915 in Salem, WI. Her mother was ? Grant, bornin Salem, WI (?). Her father was ? Harding, born in England. Johnemigrated to America via Newfoundland, Canada with his brothers Josephand Frank in 1873. While in Newfoundland they were fishermen.

From the Christian Advocate, 1916, memoirs of John Cox Hartnell: "JohnCox Hartnell was born in Chalden, Dorchester, England, May 21, 1834 anddied September 12, 1916. He married Elizabeth Harding at Overmoigne,England September 1, 1858. To this happy couple eight children wereborn, one of which died in infancy. Like many another enterprisingcouple they set their eyes on a new world and gathering together they alcame to America. This was in the year 1873. They settled in Salem, WI.Here they were Americanized. The later years of this couple's life wererich in fruit age that will be measured by eternal standards. The bandsof love that bound them together grew stronger with the years. They bothcame to the end of life with a confident hope that 'there was laid up forthem a crown of glory' as their reward."

    John Cox Hartnell Narrative:

Information on the Hartnell Family furnished to C.H. [Charles Henry]Hartnell by his cousin, Lucille Crow, of 1610 71st Street, Kenosha,Wisconsin. 8/25/1964 With commentary by C.H. Hartnell, dated January,1964.

John Cox Hartnell (my Grandfather) was born in Chalden-Herrin,Dorsetshire, England on May 21, 1834 and he died September 12, 1916 inSalem, Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Harding at Owermoigne, England onSeptember 1, 1858.

To this couple, eight children were born, one of whom died in infancy.[Note - one reference says she died onboard ship.] William, Mary,Thomas, John, Bessie, Arthur and Anna. Anna, who was married to CharlesFindlay, is the only one still living. (She is now 90 years old and isconfined to a rest home in Kenosha, Wisconsin.) All of the children wereborn in England except Anna, who was born in Salem, Wisconsin.

[Note - John's brothers Joe and Frank, also born in England, emigrated toNewfoundland where they were fishermen. They later moved to KenoshaCounty, Wisconsin.]

Like many another enterprising couple, they [John and Elizabeth] settheir eyes on the new world and gathering together what little they hadthey came to America in 1873. They settled in Salem, Wisconsin, nearrelatives (the Grant family). Here they became American citizens. [Note- The mother of Elizabeth Harding Hartnell, John Cox Hartnell's wife, was a Grant. She was born in Salem, Wisconsin, but married Mr. Hardingwho was born in England. Elizabeth was born in England.]

John Cox Hartnell earned a living by doing carpenter work, which he haddone in England, also operated a saw mill and a syrup factory makingsorghum from sugar cane. He also had a cider mill. (I remember as a boythat he used to send us a large barrel of cider in the fall).

After the sons finished their schooling (eighth grade) at the Brass Ball[Bell ?] School they were employed by farmers in the neighborhood, exceptJohn who learned the watch repairing and engraving trade. (In lateryears he was employed by the Dauber-Hampton Watch Company, Canton, Ohio,as an engraver. I called on him once in Canton when I first came toAkron, but he seemed rather indifferent so never contacted him again. Hedid not have much to do with his brothers and sisters. He was marriedbut had no children and died in Canton in the early 1930's.)

As the years passed the family scattered. William and Thomas going toStacyville, Iowa, in the early 1880's to become farmers. Tom marriedMinnie [Mae] Penney, my mother's sister. He originally had a farm nearours in Iowa, but moved to Lawton, Oklahoma about 1912 and both diedthere. They had a daughter, Grace, now living in Lawton, Oklahoma - donot know her married name. She had one daughter. Another daughter,Lois, lived and died in Los Angeles. A son, John Hartnell, lived inOklahoma City, but he is deceased, and no children. Another son, PaulHartnell and wife Dorothy, live in Oklahoma City at 4608 SE 25th Street. He worked for Goodyear there but had a heart attack last summer and hadto quit work. We saw him in 1955 on our return trip from California andArizona. They have no children. [Note - CH Hartnell's son, William, andwife Margaret (Peg) moved to Arizona. CH and his second wife, Dorothy(Dot) would go out for visits during the winter. William (Bill) and Peghad two daughters. Bill was a veterinarian in Akron, Ohio before movingto Arizona. At some point he switched jobs and worked for the US Govt.He and Peg eventually divorced and he later married Rosie. Peg was aprofessor at the University in Flagstaff, Arizona.]

Anna became a school teacher, Mary and Bessie were kept busy withhousework. Bessie married William Wood and they pioneered in alumbering area at Withee, Wisconsin where they cleared land for a farm. Both are deceased and I have no information about children.

Mary married Charles Haigh and moved to Cumberland, Wisconsin. They hadone son, Fred. All are deceased.

Anna married Charles Findlay and they operated a dairy farm at Salem,Wisconsin. [He later worked at the Kenosha Electric Company.] Charlesdied in 1947 at the age of 78. They had a son Archie who never married,a daughter Lucile, who is married to Frank Crow and lives at 1610 71stStreet, Kenosha, Wisconsin. Another daughter Gladys is married to LeRoyNohling and also lives in Kenosha. Lucile is now 64, and I have nevermet her. She wrote to Irene Blong at Christmas time and she sent theletter to me, so I wrote to Lucile on January 34d and she wrote back onJanuary 11th, telling me all about her children and grand children. Iwould like to go up there and get acquainted with the various cousins, but don't suppose I will. It is a shame I didn't go there while livingin Madison and Chicago. She said there are 17 Hartnells listed in theKenosha telephone directory, all probably second or third cousins. Shethinks they are mostly descendants of our grandfather's brothers.

Arthur Hartnell was in the garage business in Salem, Wisconsin, and soldreal estate. He and his wife Verna are deceased. They had one son,Eugene who now operates the garage in Salem. He had one daughter, nosons. [Note - Arthur & Gene's garage may have been associated with FordMotor Company.]

Anyway from the above you can see why the Hartnell name, from our limb ofthe tree, is dying out, the men either have no children or have allgirls. So be it.
