    Notes:

    From Manuel Kindelan

"I have been researching in Spanish archives to trace the history of theKindelan's in Spain. I have found considerable information specially inArchivo de Simancas, where there are many documents relating to the irishregiments in Spain during XVII, XVIII centuries (Regimiento de Irlanda,de Ultonia, de Hibernia) , and in Archivo Militar de Segovia for the XIXcentury. Until recently, most Kindelans in Spain were military. I amplanning to go to Ireland and try to get information on the Kindelans inIreland, but I don't know yet when I will be able to do so. I reallywould love to do it.
Let me summarize the story of the Kindelan's in Spain (and Cuba).

The Kindelans in Spain descend from Edward Kindelan, from Ballinakill(Meath). His lands are described in the Civil Survey County of Meath1654-1656. He was forced to leave Ballinakill and go to the west of theShannon with the rest of the Irish papists. He had 4 sons: Patrick (whodied in the battle of Aghrim in 1691 fighting with the Jacobites),Vincent, Ultan (these 2 came to Spain and were officers in the Spanisharmy) and Michael who remained in Ireland. Michael married Celia Luttrelland had 7 sons: 5 of them (Thomas, John, Ultan, Vincent, Edward) came toSpain like their uncles and joined the Spanish army, Patrick (was aDominican in Rome) and only Francis stayed in Ireland. I have noinformation on the descendants of Francis.

The Kindelans who came to Spain became officers in one of the 3 Irishregiments of the spanish army: Regimiento de Infanteria de Irlanda,Regimiento de Hibernia, Regimiento de Ultonia. Thomas died in the battleof Conil, Edward died in the battle of Camposanto, while John, Ultan andVincent had successful military careers. Vincent (born in 1701 in CastleRickard) became Vicente and was colonel of the Regimiento de Hibernia andlatter Governor of Zamora. He married Francisca O'Regan (also of irishorigin) and had 5 sons. One of them Sebastian was a cadet in theRegimiento de Irlanda. In 1787 he was appointed captain of the RegimientoFixo de Mexico and went to Mexico and Florida. In 1795 he was promoted tocolonel and in 1799 was appointed Gobernador de Santiago de Cuba. From1812 to 1815 he was Governor of Florida Oriental and played a crucialrole in the defense of San Agustin that was being sieged by the Floridapatriots and American troops. He was also Gobernador de Santo Domingo(1818-1821) and Gobernador de Cuba (1822-1823). He married Ana ManuelMozo de la Torre, daughter of a rich Cuban landowner, and had 7 sons. Idescend from one of them, Juan Kindelan, who was Procurador en Cortes. Heand his family remained in Cuba and became very prominent in Cubansociety (a daughter of him married Francisco Vicente Aguilera leader ofthe Cuban Revolution and Vice President of Cuba). 3 of the sons of Juanreturned to Spain a few years before the independence of Cuba.

All the Kindelans in Spain come from one of the sons of Juan; ...

Alfredo Kindelan (pioneer of Spanish aviation) was the son of Ultano. Letme also mention that Sebastian and his brother Juan were made Caballerosde la Orden de Santiago, and to be accepted in these military orders theyhad to pass some pruebas which included a proof of their origins. Thesepruebas are kept in Spanish archives and show the genealogy of Sebastian.
Please keep in touch and send me any information on the Kindelans (orKendlan or Kinlan) in Wales.
    Best regards,
    Manuel Kindelan"
