Thought you might be interested in this extract from page 12 of thebook, "The Deil's Ain", by Roy J. M.Pugh, published by Scotland HarlawHeritage, 2001: ============= In 1576, Katherene Roiss [Ross], LadyFowlis [Foulis], the wife of Lord Monro of Foulis and daughter of LordRoss of Balnagowan, was accused of attempting to murder her eldeststepson, Robert Monro, so that her brother George Ross might marry herstepson?s widow and thus become heir to the Foulis estate. This alsomeant murdering George Ross?s wife to allow the marriage to take place. The motive was clearly to increase the lands and finances of the Rosses. To help her with the double murder, Lady Foulis engaged a group ofwitches whose notoriety was well-known. As subsequent events proved, theywere certainly notorious, not for their success but their ineptitude. Thechief witch was Marioune McAlester, colloquially known as Losky Loncart.Under her direction, the witches made images of their victims from?butter? and shot at them with elf-arrows, in reality Neolithic flintarrowheads. The witches missed their targets no fewer than twenty times! They next brewed a pail of poison; the pail leaked, the poison ran outand they were left with dregs; Lady Foulis obtained a second brew fromLosky Loncart but the pipkin of poison broke and the servant carrying itdrank some and obligingly died. Lady Foulis then took matters into herown hands. She fed her sister-in-law food laced with rat poison; theyoung girl didn?t die but she was extremely ill for a long time. At leasttwo of the unknown total number of witches involved, Christian Ross andThomas McKendrick, were convicted of witchcraft and burned in 1577. By1589, Lady Foulis was widowed and her second stepson, Hector Monro, hadsucceeded his brother Robert on his death. Hector Monro brought an actionagainst his stepmother and several people including Losky Loncart,William McGillivray, Agnes Roy and John McNillan. There is no record ofthe outcome as far as the witches are con-cerned. At her trial, LadyFoulis was acquitted, not surprisingly since the jury was made up fromher estate servants and dependents. In his turn, Hector Monro wasarrested on suspicion of causimg the death of George Ross but he too wasacquitted by a similarly sympathetic jury. As for the witches, it is
probable that they were strangled and burnt at the stake. ================

This pleasant lady, (Katharine 'of Balnagown Lady Fowlis' Ross) wasfortunately only a 4th cousin to me.

  1. 4.  Robert (14th of Fowlis) Munro (son of Hector (13th of Fowlis) Munro and Catherine Mackenzie); died on 8 Sep 1547 in Battle Of Pinkie.

    Notes:

He was known as Robert Mor on account of his large stature.

Burkes Peerage shows his wife as daughter of Alexander (Sir) (ofWestfield) Dunbar who died 10 March 1497/98 & Isabel (of Duffus)Sutherland

    From Doug Hickling
THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND "Robert of Fowlis, ... (who fell honourablyfighting valiantly for his country in the battle of Pinkie),

For sources, etc. see information received from Doug Hickling "THEANCESTRY OF MARGARET DUNBAR, WHO MARRIED ROBERT MUNRO, 14TH BARON OFFOULIS" in Notes under Margaret (of Cumnock) Dunbar

    From Doug Hickling:
"In his HISTORY OF THE MUNROS, MacKenzie says that Robert Munro XIV ofFowlis
"married Margaret, only daughter of Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Cumnock and
Westfield, Sheriff of Morayshire, by his second wife Janet, daughter ofJohn
Leslie of Parkhill, son of William third Earl of Rothes. The Coul MSsays
that Dunbar was a daughter of "the Laird of Haggerton Falcken, no doubt
meaning the family of Falconer of Halkerton, Kincardineshire, from whomthe
present Earl of Kintore is descended."

I spent some time yesterday at the Sutro (genealogical) Library in San
Francisco studying mostly THE SCOTS PEERAGE trying to figure out this Sir
Alexander Dunbar's ancestry. I had already decided that he could not bethe
Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Westfield, son of James (4th Earl of Moray)Dunbar,
because he died in 1498, which was probably before Janet (or Joan) Lesliewas
    born.

In v. 7 at page 281, this book says that Joan, the daughter of JohnLeslie of
Parkhill, son of William 3rd Earl of Rothes, married Alexander (Sir)Dunbar of
Cumnock, Knight, with issue 2 sons and a daughter. In v. 9, at page 110,
there is a note that Patrick (Sir) Gordon of Huntly married (1) shortlybefore
4 February 1578, Jane Leslie, "Moyness, daughter of John Leslie of
Parkhill and widow of Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Cumnock. She died inAugust
    1579."

THE SCOTS PEERAGE apparently does not provide ancestries of mere knights, but
as I recall the entry for Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Westfield refers tohim as
the progenitor of the Cumnock Dunbars. It seems to me that my Alexander(Sir)
of Cumnock is probably a grandson of the Alexander (Sir) of Westfield, but I
have found no help in the Roots/Web gedcoms. I see several entries for aSir
Alexander Dunbar of Conzie, who is a grandson of Alexander (Sir) ofWestfield,
including your own gedcom entries, but nothing that shows a Alexander(Sir)
    Dunbar of Cumnock."

THE ANCESTRY OF MARGARET DUNBAR, WHO MARRIED
ROBERT MUNRO, 14TH BARON OF FOULIS

    1. CRINAN THE THANE, Abbot of Dunkeld, who was the father of Duncan,King of Scotland (1034-40) and of

    2. MALDRED or MALCOLM who married Ealdgith, daughter of Uchtred, Earl ofNorthumberland, by his wife Elgiva, daughter of Aethelred II, King ofEngland. Their first son was

    3. GOSPATRIC, Earl of Northumberland and first Earl of Dunbar, bornbetween 1040 and 1048. After supporting the Danes in their invasion ofthe north of England, he made peace with William I, King of England, atChristmas 1067 and was entrusted by the king with the government ofNorthumberland. Deprived of that post, he fled to Scotland where hereceived from King Malcolm III "Dunbar with adjacent lands in Lothian."He was succeeded by his son,

    6. WALDEVE, fourth Earl of Dunbar. His wife was Aelina or Aline. Hedied in 1182 and was succeeded by their son,

    7. PATRICK, fifth Earl of Dunbar. He married first, in 1184, Ada,natural daughter of King William the Lion. He married second, between1215 and 1218, Cristina, widow of William de Brus of Annandale. He diedin 1232 and was succeeded by a son of his first marriage,

    8. PATRICK, sixth Earl of Dunbar, who married his stepsister Euphemia, daughter of Cristina and William de Brus. He died about 1267 and wassucceeded by their son,

    9. Their son Patrick(Sir) succeeded as eighth Earl. Another son was

    10. Alexander (Sir) DUNBAR, who had one son,

    11. Patrick (Sir) DUNBAR, who married Isabella Randolph, co-heiress ofher brother John Randolph, Earl of Moray. Their sons John and David wereancestors of Margaret Dunbar.

LINE FROM JOHN DUNBAR, SON OF Patrick (Sir) DUNBAR
    AND HIS WIFE ISABELLA RANDOLPH

12a. JOHN DUNBAR, the second son, was created Earl of Moray in 1372. Hemarried Marjorie, a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, afterwardsKing Robert II, by his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Adam (Sir) Mureof Rowallan. He died before 15 February 1392 when their son John wasstyled Earl of Moray. Their second son was

13a. ALEXANDER DUNBAR, who is said to have married Matilda, the heiressof James Fraser of Frendraught, who carried on the line of this family.Their son,

14a. JAMES DUNBAR of Frendraught became fourth Earl of Moray, succeedinghis cousin Thomas Dunbar, third Earl of Moray. He died or was killedabout 10 August 1430. By his wife, Katherine or Janet Seton, he left twodaughters, Janet and Elizabeth as co-heiresses. Prior to this marriage,he had been handfasted to Isobel Innes, daughter of Walter (Sir) Innes, but she apparently died before marriage. The son of James and Isobel was

15a. Alexander (Sir) DUNBAR of Westfield, who was regarded asillegitimate and therefore ineligible to succeed to the earldom. He wasamply compensated by being given the barony of Westfield, and thehereditary office of Sheriff of Moray. He married Isabel, daughter ofAlexander Sutherland, third baron of Duffus, from which marriage all ofthe Scottish families of Dunbar are said to be descended. Their oldestson was

16a. James (Sir) DUNBAR, second Baron of Westfield, Sheriff of Moray, etc., who married his cousin Euphemia (line 16b), eldest daughter andco-heiress of Patrick Dunbar of Cumnock and Mochrum, thus uniting twoDunbar family lines as well as a great deal of real estate.

LINE FROM DAVID DUNBAR, SON OF Patrick (Sir) DUNBAR
    AND HIS WIFE ISABELLA RANDOLPH

12b. David (Sir) DUNBAR, was granted extensive land, including Cumnock,by his brother George, the tenth Earl of Dunbar. He died before 1421 andwas succeeded by his son,

13b. Patrick (Sir) DUNBAR of Cumnock, who died before 1437 and wassucceeded by his son,

14b. John (Sir) DUNBAR of Cumnock and Mochrum, who was succeeded by

15b. Patrick (Sir) DUNBAR of Cumnock and Mochrum, who married Margaret, daughter of Thomas (Sir) Boyd, ancestor of the earls of Kilmarnock.Their daughter and co-heiress,

16b. EUPHEMIA DUNBAR, married her cousin James (Sir) Dunbar (line 16a),eldest son of Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Westfield, Sheriff of Moray, whogot with her the barony of Cumnock.

CONTINUATION OF THE LINE FROM James (Sir) DUNBAR
    AND HIS WIFE EUPHEMIA DUNBAR

    17. James (Sir) DUNBAR of Cumnock and Westfield, hereditary Sheriff ofMoray, etc., son of James (Sir) and Euphemia Dunbar. He marriedElizabeth, daughter of James (Sir) Ogilvie of Deskford. He was succeededby his eldest son,

    18. Alexander (Sir) DUNBAR of Cumnock and Westfield, who because of hisvalor and intrepidity was called the Bold Sheriff of Moray. His firstwife was Jean Falconer, daughter of George (Sir) Falconer of Halkertonand his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John Erskine of Dun. They were theparents of

    19. Margaret (or Anna) Dunbar, who married Robert Munro, 14th Baron ofFoulis.

    SOURCES

Unless otherwise stated, the above information is from the Dunbar andMoray entries found in THE SCOTS PEERAGE, v. 3:239 and v. 6:298; and inTHE COMPLETE PEERAGE, v. 4:503 and v. 9:164.

The identification of the wives on lines 7, 8, and 9 is from an article"A Clarification of the Dunbar Pedigree," by Andrew B. W. MacEwen, appearing in THE GENEALOGIST, v. 9, no. 2, Fall 1988.

Much of the information on lines 14b, 15a and b, 16a and b, and 17, 18,and 19 is from THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, by Robert (Sir) Douglas, published in 1798, beginning at page 113.

At page 120, this book states that Alexander (Sir) Dunbar (line 18), thefather of Margaret Dunbar, was married to a woman whose name has "notcome to our attention," but whom he had two sons, one of them beingPatrick (Sir), his heir. The article identifies his second wife asJanet, daughter of John Leslie of Parkhill, by whom he had another sonand also a daughter, Margaret, who married Robert Munro. I believe thatMargaret was, in fact, a daughter of the first marriage.

The discussion on John Leslie of Parkhill in THE SCOTS PEERAGE, v.7:279-281, says that John married Euphemia Moncrieff shortly after 22October 1541, when as a member of the royal household, he received 50pounds to buy garments for his marriage. The first record naming her ashis (second) wife is dated 10 July 1542. The article further states thattheir daughter Joan [sic] married Alexander (Sir) Dunbar about 1560. Anydaughter of John Leslie of Parkhill would have been at least a generationtoo young to have married Alexander (Sir) Dunbar and to have given birthto a daughter, Margaret, who could have married Robert Munro, 14th Baronof Foulis, and to have given birth to seven of his children before hisdeath at the battle of Pinkie in September 1547. Janet (or Joan) Lesliemust therefore be rejected, but the article's reference to SheriffDunbar's first marriage to an unknown woman invites consideration as towhether Margaret was a product of that marriage.

Fortunately, there is documentary evidence, apparently unknown to theauthor of the article appearing in THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, whichestablishes her parentage. In 1663, one Alexander Munro of Obsdale, agreat-great-grandson of Robert Munro, 14th Baron of Foulis, who marriedMargaret Dunbar, was a career soldier living in France. He wanted tomarry "a French of rank." In order to impress the and to obtain herfamily's consent, he applied to King Charles for a "birth brief," whichwould attest that he was of gentle birth. That document, which stillexists, is set forth in Alexander Mackenzie's HISTORY OF THE MUNROS OFFOWLIS, at pages 171-174. Referring first to Alexander Munro'sgreat-grandfather, the birth brief says:
and Robert was born of the former Robert of Fowlis, Laird thereof(who fell honourably fighting valiantly for his country in the battle ofPinkie), of Anna [sic] Dunbar, daughter of Alexander Dunbar, Sheriff ofMoray, by Jean Falconer, daughter of the Laird of Halcartoun...

In an age when one's status in life depended so much upon one'sancestors, it is reasonable to believe that Alexander Munro of Obsdaleknew or could ascertain the identity of his great-great grandmother.Since the purpose of the birth brief was to impress the family of theproposed bride that he was of gentle birth and worthy of her, it seemshighly likely that, had he been descended from John of Parkhill Leslieand the Earls of Rothes, a family line far more glorious than that of theFalconers, he would have claimed that descent in the birth brief. Thebirth brief was issued in the king's name "By Act of the Lords of SecretCouncil." This is highly persuasive evidence which precedes THE BARONAGEOF SCOTLAND by 135 years!

It appears highly probable that Jean Falconer was the daughter of George(Sir) Falconer of Halkerton and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of JohnErskine of Dun. George (Sir)'s son and heir, David Falconer ofHalkerton, who married Mariot Dunbar, one of Sheriff Dunbar's cousins, was probably Jean Falconer's brother.
