    Notes:

The family name of Bonner is of Norman-French origin with the original Bonners arriving in Britain during the Norman Conquest in the 11th century. There have been numerous spellings of the name: in France as Bonheur and Bonaire all of which have the key of "good". Other spellings of the surname include Bona, Bonar, Booner, Bonney, Bonher and Boner. Many of these latter spellings probably resulted from writing the name as it sounded. Today the name of Bonner is common in France, Germany, England and Northern Ireland.

The Bonners were a prominent family in England with Quentin de Riddell an ancestor of the noble house of Buchanan-Ridell. Quentin first bore the ensign of Bonner. Numerous documents, during the reign of Henry the VIII have references to Riddell and Bonner. The Ridell and Bonner families bear the same coat-of-arms, indicating that Bonner descended from Riddell

There were several Bonners appearing in America in the 1600's including Thomas ,Henry and Richard around 1638. Thomas, James and William Bonner migrated to the Carolina's and Georiga from the Chesapeake Bay area.

He died 1 July 1647 leaving his entire estate to his wife. Due to heavy debts, the landed estate of Mains was deeded over to John Douglas, a relative. At this time Mains stayed in the Douglas family but passed to another Douglas line.

Sir Robert obtained Blackerston by marriage. He purchased Blythswood. It should be noted that Col. John Douglas's plantation in Maryland was named Blythswood (Blythswood) the name of the Manor in Scotland.

Sir Robert, as did most Scots, suffered greatly from the ravages of Oliver Cromwell. This was the primary cause of his financial problems along with a default , of the city of Glasgow, on money owed to him.

Robert married Lady Susanna Douglas on 3 Feb 1635 in St. Andrews Church At Holborn, England. Susanna (daughter of Robert (Viscount Belhaven) (of Spot) Douglas and Elizabeth Whalley) was born about 1617 in London, England; died about 1692 in London, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Susan Douglases birth was legitimized on 30 July 1631, by Royal Decree, when she was thirteen years old. This would put her date of birth at 1617 or 1618.
