4. | Joseph Kershaw was born in 1727 in Yorkshire, England (son of Joseph Kershaw); died on 28 Dec 1791 in Camden, South Carolina. Notes:
"Joseph Kershaw, the eldest son of Joseph Kershaw (b. 1699), of Sowerby
in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, was born in Yorkshire in 1727
and immigrated with his brothers Ely and William to South Carolina ca.
1755 where he became a clerk in the store of James Laurens. In 1758, he
moved to Fredericksburg Township and established a store at Pine Tree
Hill, acting as agent for the mercantile company of Ancrum, Lance &
Loocock. Eventually, in 1763, Joseph Kershaw formed a partnership with
John Chestnut, Ely Kershaw, William Ancrum, and Aaron Loocock and became
the largest and most influential merchant in the Camden and Cheraw area,
owning extensive flour and grist mills, indigo works, a tobacco
warehouse, a brewey and distillery, in addition to his flourishing
mercantile business. "
Joseph married Sarah Mathis on 20 Oct 1762. Sarah (daughter of Daniel Mathis and Sophia Gauntt) was born about 1730; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
