    Notes:

    "Caerlaverock's First Castle
When Sir John Maxwell was granted the Caerlaverock estate in around1220, he began to build a castle here. It seems that within fifty yearsthis first castle had been abandoned, and the castle that you see todaywas built on an outcrop of rock. Before last year's dig, all that wasvisible of the old castle was a grassy earthen mound, surrounded by amoat. In 1998 the archaeologists uncovered a series of buildings on thecastle mound, enclosed by a curtain wall with corner towers. "

    "Caerlaverock Castle
Surrounded by a double moat and hundreds of acres of flat marshy willowwoods (known in Scotland as a "moss"), Caerlaverock was built to controlthe South-West entrance to Scotland which in early times was the waterwayacross the Solway Firth.
Building began in about 1277, and by 1300 it was besieged by Edward Iduring his war against the Scottish king John (Balliol), a war stillremembered for the brave resistance put up by the Scots under Sir WilliamWallace.

Its triangular plan is unique in Scotland, and during the seige of 1300it was noted as being

". . . so strong a castle that it feared no siege... in shape it was likea shield for it has but three sides round it, with a tower at eachcorner... And I think that you will never see a more finely situatedcastle, for on one side can be seen the Irish Sea, towards the west andto the north the fair moorland, surrounded by an arm of the sea, so thatno creature born can approach it on two sides without putting himself indanger of the sea. On the south side it is not easy, for there are manyplaces difficult to get through because of woods and marshes and ditcheshollowed out by the sea where it meets the river."
