Generation: 1

  1. 1.  William (of Carnwath) 1st Lord Somerville was born before 1400 (son of Sir Thomas (of Linton & Carnwath) Somerville and Janet (of Darnley) Stewart); and died.

    Notes:

William's mother is often shown as Mary (of Orkney) Sinclair. HoweverDoug Hickling (Dhhic@comcast.net) points out:

"I am suggesting some changes/additions to the ancestry of Helen Hepburn, and
her husband John (of Carnwath) 2nd Lord Somerville. John's grandmotherwas
not Mary (of Orkney) Sinclair, as shown by you, but rather Janet, daughter of
Alexander (Sir) Stewart of Darnley by his first wife ____ Turnbull, daughter of
Sir Turnbull of Minto. Alexander (Sir) was descended (in the male line)from
Alan (Sir) Stewart, the second son of John (Sir) Stewart of Bonkyl and(in a
female line) from Walter (Sir) Stewart, the fourth son of Alan (Sir). The
Somerville article in CP12:92, which was published in 1953 and istherefore
one of the newer CP volumes, states that William Somerville of Carnwathwas
the son and heir of Thomas (Sir) Somerville and his first wife, Janet, daughter
of Alexander (Sir) Stewart of Darnley and was born in or before 1400. At
footnote d, the article says that Thomas (Sir) married Janet Stewartbefore
July 1391, thus obtaining the barony of Cambusnethan. The same note says
that he married Mary Sinclair in 1407 and tht it is unlikely that she wasthe
mother of his son William. Thomas (Sir)' third wife, whom he marriedpursuant
to a 2 November 1411 dispensation, was Elizabeth Keith, 4th daughter ofSir
William Keith, who was the widow of Nicholas (Sir) Erskine of Kinnoulland of
    Adam (Sir) Gordon of Huntly.

Helen Hepburn's father was Adam (Sir) Hepburn, as shown by you, and hermother was Janet Borthwick, daughter of William (Sir) Borthwick, pursuantto a papal dispensation on 2 November 1411, which, by coincidence is thedate of the dispensation mentioned previously. I am getting the Hepburninformation from SP2:135 etc., but the information on the Borthwickdispensation is in the
addenda and corrections SP9:39. Adam (Sir) Hepburne of Hailes was the sonof Patrick Hepburne younger of Hailes and a daughter and co-heir of thefamily of Vaux. The SP article has earlier generations."

    Also from Doug Hickling

SCOTS PEERAGE, vol. 8, page 1 etc.
At page 2, this work lists John as the second Lord Somerville, statesthat he
married Helen, daughter of Adam (Sir) Hepburn and that they had (1)William the 3rd Lord Somerville, and (2) Elizabeth, who marriedGillsepic or Celestine
Campbell, eldest son of Duncan (Sir) Campbell. Lord John's parents arelisted
as William the 1st lord and Janet Mowat. William's parents are listedas Sir
Thomas "sometimes called lst Lord Somerville" and his wife MarySinclair,
daughter of Henry Sinclair, lst Earl of Orkney.

William married Janet (of Stonehouse) Mowat between 1428 and 1429. Janet (daughter of Sir John (of Stonehouse) Mowat) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    1. John (of Carnwath) 2nd Lord Somerville died in Nov 1491.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Sir Thomas (of Linton & Carnwath) Somerville was born about 1370 (son of Thomas (Sir) Somerville); died in Dec 1444.

    Notes:

Some say his 1st wife was Janet, daughter of Alexander (Sir) Stewart ofDarnley was mother of his children.

    "Thomas Somerville, 1st Lord (b c1370, d 12.1444)
BE1883 reports that Thomas was created a peer on 15.12.1430 but TSP,whilst accepting that others refer to him as the 1st Lord and whilstacknowledging that he was called to Parliament, specifically refers tohis son as the 1st Lord. We follow BE1883 because its numbering systemappears to be more often used than TSP's.
    m. (1391) Janet Stewart (dau of Sir Alexander Stewart of Dernley)
Through this marriage the barony of Cambusnethan came into this family.
