Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Elizabeth (of Moray) Dunbar was born about 1424 (daughter of James (4th Earl of Moray) Dunbar and Katherine Or Janet Seton); died before 17 Feb 1485-1486.

    Notes:

called Mary by some writers and also Agnes,

Although the younger daughter, seems to have carried the earldom and a great share of the estates
    to her husband

(Research):See also notes for her sister, Janet

Elizabeth married Archibald (Earl of Moray) Douglas before 26 Apr 1442. Archibald (son of James (7th Earl of) (The Gross) Douglas and Beatrix Sinclair) was born in 1426; died on 1 May 1455 in Battle Of Arkinholm. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
She survived her 1st husband, was contracted to marry George, Lord Gordon , but was divorced on the plea of consanguinity before 1459.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  James (4th Earl of Moray) Dunbar (son of Alexander Dunbar and Matilda (of Frendraught) Fraser); died on 10 Aug 1430 in Murdered At Frendraught.

    Notes:

    From Doug Hickling
"JAMES DUNBAR of Frendraught became fourth Earl of Moray, succeeding his cousin Thomas Dunbar, third Earl of Moray. He died or was killed about 10 August 1430. By his wife, Katherine or Janet Seton, he left two daughters, Janet and Elizabeth as co-heiresses. Prior to this marriage,he had been handfasted to Isobel Innes, daughter of Walter (Sir) Innes, but she apparently died before marriage."

For sources, etc. see information received from Doug Hickling "THEANCESTRY OF MARGARET DUNBAR, WHO MARRIED ROBERT MUNRO, 14TH BARON OFFOULIS" in Notes under Margaret (of Cumnock) Dunbar

James + Katherine Or Janet Seton. Katherine (daughter of Alexander (Sir) (of Gordon) Seton) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Katherine Or Janet Seton (daughter of Alexander (Sir) (of Gordon) Seton); and died.

    Notes:

    Married:
Earl James was married, but the history of his marriage or marriages is obscure. Macfarlane, the two editions of Douglas's Peerage, and Dr. George Burnett in the Exchequer Rolls, all express varying opinions, but failing any charter evidence, of which none has been discovered, the oldest testimony on the subject may be stated. Hector Boece, though not a reliable authority, seems to have known facts about the Dunbars which were overlooked by genealogists until lately discovered to be comparatively true. He wrote about 1527, and his continuation volume, printed in 1574, is closely followed by Pitscottie, who states that James Dunbar, Earl of Moray, was handfasted to Isobel Innes, daughter to the Laird of Innes, but she died before marriage. After her death the Earl married Katharine (or Janet), daughter to Alexander Seton of Gordon.

Alexander + Matilda (of Frendraught) Fraser. Matilda (daughter of James (of Frendraught) Fraser) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Matilda (of Frendraught) Fraser (daughter of James (of Frendraught) Fraser); and died.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  John (1st Earl of Moray) Dunbar was born about 1342 (son of Sir Patrick Dunbar and Isabel (of Moray) Randolph); died before 15 Feb 1392.

    Notes:

    From Doug Hickling
"JOHN DUNBAR, the second son, was created Earl of Moray in 1372. Hemarried Marjorie, a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, afterwardsKing Robert II, by his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Adam (Sir) Mureof Rowallan. He died before 15 February 1392 when their son John wasstyled Earl of Moray."

Sometimes shown as the son of Black Agnes (of Moray) Randolph.
However Doug Hickling has found otherwise as he says:

"You list the mother of John (1st Earl of Moray) Dunbar as Black Agnes(of Moray) Randolph. In fact Black Agnes and her husband had no childrenand John (1st Earl of Moray) Dunbar was the son of Patrick (Sir) Dunbar, who married Isabella Randolph, who was Black Agnes'
sister. Isabella (or Isobel or Isabel) Randolph and her sister Agneswere
daughters of Thomas (Sir) Randolph, who became first Earl of Moray, andhis wife Isobel Stewart, daughter of John (Sir) Stewart of Bonkill byMargaret, heiress of Bonkhill. This is shown in SP 6:294-5. Thusneither of the Randolph sisters were descended from John/Thomas (3rd Earlof Moray Regent) Randolph and his spouse Euphemia de Ross. SP 6:295-7,says that Thomas, second Earl of Moray, left no issue and neither did hisbrother John, 3rd Earl of Moray. So, Euphemia had no children by him andlater married the man who became King Robert II and had children by him."
