4. | Sir Richard (of Thirleston and Lethington) Maitland was born in 1496 in Thirlestane Castle, Lauder Scotland (son of William (of Thirleston and Lethington) Maitland and Martha Seton); died on 20 Mar 1586 in Thirlestane Castle, Lauder Scotland. Notes:
He was a Senator of the College of Justice, an Ordinary Lord of Session from 1561 until 1584, and notable Scottish poet.
He held the political office of Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland and was also the Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland, from 1563 to 1567, and was succeeded in this post by his son Sir John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane.
They had three sons and four daughters, including
William Maitland of Lethington, Secretary of State to Mary, Queen of Scots, and
Sir John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane, Lord Chancellor of Scotland;
Thomas Maitland;[1]
Isabella Maitland, who married Sir James Heriot of Traboun
Richard married Mariotta Cranstoun in 1524 in Lauder, Scotland. Mariotta (daughter of Sir Thomas (of Corsbie) Cranstoun) was born in 1500; died in Mar 1586. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

6. | Malcolm 3rd Lord Fleming was born about 1494 in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, Scotland (son of John 2nd Lord Fleming and Eupheme Drummond); died on 10 Sep 1547 in Battle Of Pinkie. Notes:
During an eventful life, he was captured at Solway Moss in 1542 and marched to the Tower of London. Subsequently released with his son held hostage, Malcolm at first appeared to support Henry VIII's proposal to marry the English king's son to the infant queen Mary but then changed his position. Prior to his death on the battlefield at Pinkie in 1547, he started work building a collegiate church in Biggar, the last of its kind in Scotland.
