DEATH OF MRS. MELINDA LANE, Pioneer Settler Here Passed Awa y Friday

Mrs. Melinda Lane, a pioneer settler in Cherokee County, di ed at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Lewis, 324 Wes t Sycamore street, Friday, February 2, at 10 P.M.

Mrs. Lane had been ill a couple of weeks, when pneumonia de veloped, which resulted in her death. She was 81 years an d 8 months old. The deceased came to Cherokee County in 186 8 and for a number of years resided near the Stony schoolho use. For the past twenty-seven years she had made her hom e in Columbus. She was well known and leaves many friends i n Columbus and throughout the county.

She is survived by eight daughters and one son. They are: M rs. Cora Franklin of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. J. E. Littl e of Wichita, Mrs. Mac Crosson and Mrs. Fred Crosson of Edd yville, Iowa, Mrs. Mae Rafferty, Mrs. Oscar Bland and Mrs . James Lewis, Mrs. Jesse Stockton and Pat Lane of Columbus . Also by three brothers, Noah Douglas of Shawnee, Okla., G . W. Douglas of Crestline, and W. W. Douglas of Columbus, a nd one sister, Mrs. T. W. Ownes of Crestline.

Funeral services were held from the home on Sunday, Februar y 4, at 2:30 P.M., conducted by the Rev. Hill-Tanner of th e Baptist Church. Burial was in the city cemetery.

GEORGE W. DOUGLASS, a prosperous farmer of Cherokee County , who is located on a good farm in section 13, township 33 , range 24, in Crawford township, was born in 1853 in Luca s County, Iowa, and is a son of Milton and Samantha (Bales ) Douglass.

The father of Mr. Douglass was born in 1818 in Indiana and , after his marriage, on December 29, 1839, settled down t o farming until 1851, when he moved to Iowa, taking with hi m his teams and household possessions.

In 1868 he again moved Westward, and located, with his wif e and their 10 children, in Cherokee County, Kansas. he sec ured the southeast quarter of section 12, in Crawford towns hip. He was one of the earliest settlers in this section, a nd at that time no one could have been found rash enough t o predict that the present bustling city of Columbus woul d grow up on the prairie wilderness. His death took place J uly 26, 1897, at the age of 79 years. His wife was born i n 1823, and died on the home farm in Crawford township, Che rokee County, January 23, 1899. For several terms Milton Do uglass served as a member of the Board of County Commission ers of Cherokee County, and he assisted in the organizatio n of the Republican party, while in Iowa. This party he con tinued to support until President Grant's second administra tion. He was one of the leading members of the Baptist Chur ch in Lucas County, Iowa. He was the father of 12 children , namely; Mrs. Melinda Lane, born June 2, 1841, who lives i n Columbus; Mrs. Eliza Vincent, born May 21, 1843, who resi des in Britton, Oklahoma; Martin, born June 26, 1845, who r esides at Oswego, Kansas; Sylvia, born October 17, 1847, wh o died, age 11 months; Lloyd Judd, born September 11, 1849 , who lives at Crestline, Kansas; George W., who was born J une 16, 1853; Mrs. Elizabeth A. Owens, born November 20, 18 55; who lives near Crestline Joseph Benson, born April 9, 1 858, who resides at Victor, Colorado; Charles Ellsworth, bo rn April 22, 1861, who was killed at Afton, Indian Territor y, September 7, 1896; Noah Milton, born June 28, 1863, wh o resides at Shawnee, Oklahoma; William Walter, born Januar y 27, 1867, who lives in Crawford township; and one child w ho died in infancy.

The subject of this sketch has passed the greater part of h is life in Cherokee County, the years 1874 and 1875, howeve r, having been spent in Southeastern Missouri. Since he rea ched the age of 20 years, he has made his own way in the wo rld without outside assistance, and has met with deserved s uccess. He is one of the substantial farmers and most highl y respected citizens of Crawford Township.

On November 26, 1882, Mr. Douglass was married to Thula Ell is, who was born in Cocke County, Tennessee, August 6, 1863 , and is a Daughter of Richard Driskill and Sarah J. (Holdw ay) Ellis. They came to Cherokee County, Kansas, in April , 1869, and located two miles east of Crestline, where th e father still resides, the mother having died in 1876. Th e three children of Mr. Ellis are: Mrs. Douglass; James How ard, of Columbus; and Elbert Hezekiah, a claim agent for th e "Frisco" railroad.

Mr. and Mrs. Douglass have had four children, namely; Richa rd L., born February 9, 1884; Sarah E., Born September 28 , 1886; Walter, born August 27, 1890, who died November 4 , 1897; and Arhtur Lloyd, born February 27, 1893. The child ren are all at home, and form a cheerful, intelligent famil y group.

Politically, Mr. Douglass is independent, or, as he facetio usly puts it, "an orphan," - none of the great parties quit e meeting the issues which he considers of paramount import ance, while he thinks all have excellent ideas in their pla tforms. He is a man of domestic tastes, enjoys his home an d his farm duties, and cares little for outside matters. H e is a member of the A.H.T.A.
