From notes compiled by Mrs. S. A. Mangam, the previous historian ofCairo: "William Crooker built a Hotel where Mr. and Mrs. JosephFrancel now live. This was the oldest hotel site before 1838 and wasoriginally called the Calder House. Some of the other owners wereBester Dexter, whose wife was Julia Ann Keller. They had twodaughters, Charlotte, who married a Mr. Hamilton, and Frances, whomarried Mr. Eggleston. The next owner was Martin Eggleston (was thisthe husband of Frances?) Then Stephen Tryon, whose wife was CatherineRichtmyer of Gilboa, was the next owner. Mr. Tryron had two daughters,Adelia, who married a professor of Music, Charles Moritz Leibich. Heleft Cairo to conduct a Conservatory of Music in Cost Rica, where hedied. Catherine Tyron married Jonathan Brown Webster. The next ownerwas Daniel Jennings. Did these men follow one another or were thereothers between? In 1867, Seymour Adams owned and operated this hotel. It must have been a good sized establishment for the records show thatin the freshet around 1880, the hotel barn, which had a 50-teamcapacity, was partly taken away. Since then the dwelling has been usedas a private residence. Zadoc was the son of Luen Dexter and Vashti Sturtevant. Luen was b. August 21, 1751, Dartmouth, Mass. and d. Sept. 16, 1838, Robert's
Corners, NY and buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. Luen and Vashti were married Feb. 27, 1777, Rochester, Plymouth Co., MAss. We are trying to locate info of their children, believed to be Freeland, Polly, Zadoc, Lydia, Bester, William. From the Will of William we know that he and Zadoc were brothers, and that Lydia was their sister. Lydia was b. about 1777 and William b. about 1790, so some age difference.

Luen, Zadoc, William and we presume Lydia (m James Dawson) made the move to Jefferson County around 1806/1810. According to Evergreen Cemetery records, Hanna Dexter, wife of Luen, d. Sept 6, 1839 at age 67 yrs. These dates do not fit with those of Vashti Sturtevant. Vashti was b. in 1756. From a DAR application Vashti is listed as the mother of all of Luen's children (William isn't mentioned at all on the DAR application) and that she is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. We believe Luen may have married a second time or whomever copied the cemetery dates made an error which is not too hard to do as I am guilty of that myself......honest mistakes.

    ------------------------------------------------

Luen married Vashti Priscilla Sturtevant on 27 Feb 1777 in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Vashti (daughter of Zadock Sturtevant and Priscilla Howes Barstow) was born on 4 Sep 1756 in Halifax, Plymouth, Massachusetts; was christened in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony; died between 1810 and 1820; was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson Co., NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Vashti Priscilla Sturtevant was born on 4 Sep 1756 in Halifax, Plymouth, Massachusetts; was christened in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony (daughter of Zadock Sturtevant and Priscilla Howes Barstow); died between 1810 and 1820; was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson Co., NY.

    Notes:

know from the McCumber store journal that Luen was in the RobertsCorner area in 1810. By comparing the 1810 and 1820 census recordsfor Luen, it seems to me that the woman living with Luen in 1810 isnot the woman living with him in 1820. Vashti was 54 in 1810 and 64in 1820. Hannah was 38 in 1810 and 48 in 1820 (age calculated fromher tombstone). Both the 1810 and 1820 census has a female over 45 inLuen?s household, while on the other hand, there was no female in thehousehold age 26-44. Hanna could not have been the woman in the 1810census, but Vashti fits the bill. Therefore, I assume Vashti diedbetween 1810 and 1820 in the Roberts Corner area, and is buried inPlot to the far right, Row 1 Section 1 Evergreen Cemetery, RobertsCorner.
