    Notes:

    In 1628, on his eldest son's marriage to Agnes Barclay, daughter to the Laird of Mathers, John Douglass resigned the lands of Tilwhilly in his favour. He, however, survived his son,being alive in 1642.

    John married Mary Young in 1594 in Hollyrood House, Edinburgh, Scotland. Mary (daughter of Sir Peter (of Seaton) Young and Elizabeth Gib) was born in 1571 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England; died in 1643 in Tilquhillie, Kincardineshire, Scotland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Her grandfather, John Erskine, of Dun, the friend of Knox, and Superintendent of Angus and Mearns under the Reformed System of Religion, died in 1591 in which year William, Earl of Morton, was appointed curator or guardian to the young Laird of Tilwhilly, the son of John Douglass and Giles Erskine,who had another son, Alexander, and two daughters, married to Patrick Graham, younger of Morphie and William Wood of Balbegno.

    There is some evidence that James died before his mother, who ran the estates before Arthur took over.

    Notes:

    (a) The book "The History of the Family of Douglass of Tilwhilly" originally said "James Douglass, of Tilwhilly, who married ... Forbes, daughter of the laird of Tolquhone".

    (b) A downloaded copy has been amended to say "James Douglass, of Tilwhilly, who married Christian Forbes, grand-daughter of the laird of Tolquhone".

    (c) The book The Pedigree of Douglas of Tilquhilly" says "James Douglas married Christian Forbes, grand-daughter of the Laird of Tolquhone"

    (d) The book "The Genealogy of the Family of Forbes", which includes a transcription of the 1580 manuscript by Matthew Lumsden of Tulliekerne says (p33, paraphrased): Sir John Forbes of Tolquhoun married ... Preston and had (among others) a son Duncan Forbes of Argeighten who married Christian Gordon, and had (among others) a son John Forbes of Terpersie, who married ... Leslie and had (among others) a daughter who married Alex Lumsden of Midstrath, then John Forbes of Cults, then James Douglas of Tilliequhillie, who bore to him Arthur Douglas, father to John Douglas of Tilliequhillie (who would have been living when the manuscript was written).
