Notes: James Chalmers (ca. 1713-1764) was a native of Arbroath who moved to Dundee and established himself there as a bookseller, printer and publisher. He was born in Aberdeen and baptized on 8 January 1713 at Dyke, Moray, the eldest surviving son of James Chalmers (bap. 1686, d. 1744), professor of divinity at Marischal College, Aberdeen (1728? 44), and his cousin Jean Chalmers. It is generally cliamed that he invented the adhesive postage stamp. James married Lady Margaret (of Tilquhille) Douglas on 22 Mar 1769 in St. James Church, Westminster, Middlesex, England.
