  1. 1.  Cecilia Neil Douglas was born about 1818 (daughter of Lt. General Sir Neil (of Glenfinart) Douglas, K.C.B. and Barbara Robertson); died on 26 Aug 1847.

    Cecilia married Hon Augustus George Frederick Jocelyn on 19 Feb 1845. Augustus (son of Robert (2nd Earl of Roden) Jocelyn and Juliana Anne Orde) was born in Dec 1811; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 2.  Lt. General Sir Neil (of Glenfinart) Douglas, K.C.B. was born on 24 Feb 1774 in Glasgow, Scotland (son of John Douglas and Cecilia Buchanan); died on 1 Sep 1853 in Brussels.

    Notes:

    Originally manufacturer in Glasgow, and partner of the firm of Douglas & Brown. Entered the army in 1801, and served throughout the war in the Peninsula, and the campaign of 1815, in command
    of the 79th Highlanders. He was severely wounded in the shoulder at Busaco, and in the knee at Quatre Bras.
    Commander of the Forces in Scotland in 1842.

    was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.).

    Glenfinart House originally lay within the estate of the Earls Dunsmore. The land passed to the Douglas family, via Archibald John Douglas and Charles Douglas, then, in 1893, to Henry Pig?-Leschallas. Henry's son, Major John Leschallas, lived there with his family until 1926, when they sold the house and moved south, having previously sold off some parts of the estate in 1922. The relationship of Archibald and Charles to Sir Neil has yet to be established.

    (Research):Sir Neil is said to have had a further son, George, who became a gardener. This George married the daughter of Dr David Aird and a free woman of colour in Antigua and was, as a result, disowned by his parents.

    Neil married Barbara Robertson on 26 Aug 1816 in Greenock, Scotland. Barbara (daughter of George Robertson) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    James Hunter was one of the partners, along with his brother-in-law George Robertson, of the Greenock Banking Company.

    GEORGE ROBERTSON (MERCHANT, BANKER & BAILLIE) -
    DIED around 1828 - Mural (middle front wall Inverkip Street burial ground.)
    Involved in many and varied business ventures, George was partner in the Greenock
    Bank with John Scott, the Ship Builder. In 1811 Greenock Guinea notes were the chief
    substitute for gold. He built a grand Mansion which is now the Tontine Hotel in
    Greenock's West End and was reputed to be the first person in Greenock to own a
    private carriage and a piano!

    Notes:

    (Research):He is not the only William Doulas, of Leith. Others of the same name were also merchants there/

  2. 9.  Catherine Dunlop was born in 1695 (daughter of James (3rd of Garnkirk) Dunlop and Lilias Campbell); died about 1785.

    Notes:

    Katherine, born 1695, married to William Douglas of Leith, she died aged upwards of ninety. They had two sons and one daughter unmarried. Robert, the eldest son, married and had a family; his descendants mostly went abroad. Their second son, John Douglas, became a merchant in Glasgow. He married Cecilia, daughter of George Buchanan, brewer, Bailie 1732 (see Mount Vernon), and had by her seven sons and one daughter, viz.: 1) William; 2) John; 3) Cecilia; 4) Neil (afterwards Sir Neil, G.C.B.); 5) Thomas Dunlop, a well-known citizen of Glasgow, who afterwards bought the estate of Dunlop, and died in 1869 aged 94; 6) Archibald; 7) James; 8) Colin. (V.) Lillias, born 1696, died unmarried; (VI.) Elizabeth, born 1698, married to Robert Rae of Tannochside. Their son was Colin Rae of Little Govan, Aitkenhead, Polmadie, &c.; (VII.) Janet, born 1701, died 1711; (VIII.) Margaret, a twin, born 1708, and died young.

    Children:
    1. Robert Douglas was born on 2 Aug 1723; was christened on 4 Aug 1723 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland; died in 1812.
    2. Sons 2, 3, 4 And 5 Douglas was born between 1724 and 1730; and died.
    3. 4. John Douglas was born in 1745; and died.

  3. 10.  George Buchanan was born in 1665 (son of George Buchanan); died in 1773.

    Notes:

    GEORGE BUCHANAN, eldest son of George I., Maltster, born 1685, died 1773, Visitor of the Maltmen 1719, City Treasurer 1726, Bailie 1732 and 1738. George II. built himself a fine mansion on the north side of Argyle Street, which till 1828 occupied the site of the Argyle Street portion of Fraser Sons & Co.'s warehouse. He owned all the ground fronting Argyle Street from this house as far east as "Bailie King's close" (a clay lane which ran north from Argyle Street, about where the Arcade now is). This ground formed part of "Palzean's Croft," the westmost section of the Langcroft. By his wife, Cecilia Forbes, George II. left, four sons and four daughters.
