  1. 2.  Hugh (of Biscany, Jamaica) Wallace was born in 1717 in Ayrshire, Scotland (son of Thomas (of Cairnhill) Wallace and Lilias Cuninghame [Cunningham]); died in Oct 1774 in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica.

    Notes:

    of Eldersley (Elderslie), Jamaica and Biscony, Renfrew

    Hugh Wallace, the third son, acquired the estate of Biscany, in the island of Jamaica.
    He. married Margaret, daughter of Whyte, Esq., of that island; and by her had issue four sons and one daughter:
    1 . Thomas, who died young.
    2. Hugh, his successor.
    3. John, who held a commission in the British Army, and died in India, unmarried.
    4. William, Lieutenant-Colonel of the 20th Regiment of Infantry, fell at the battle of Vittoria. He died unmarried.
    1. Margaret, the only daughter, married Andrew Houston of Jordanhill, county of Renfrew, and left issue.

    Hugh Wallace and his wife Margaret were in St Elizabeth, Jamaica for the baptisms of at least three of their children: Margaret (1755), Thomas (1758) and Hugh (1761).

    Hugh Wallace matriculated at the University in 1774. He was born in Jamaica, the first son of Hugh of Eldersley, in Jamaica.

    The Wallace's were a prominent Scottish slave-owning family, who owned estates and enslaved people in Jamaica over successive generations. Wallace acquired the estate of Biscany, in Jamaica, and became a merchant and an army officer.

    Five of his sons would go on to attend the University of Glasgow between 1802 and 1812. Hugh Ritchie Wallace was the first to attend, illustrating Old College's role as a home for the sons of the Scottish 'plantocracy'.

    Hugh married Margaret Whyte on 16 Aug 1753. Margaret died on 18 Apr 1784. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 4.  Thomas (of Cairnhill) Wallace was born in 1687 in Scotland (son of William Wallace, of Overkirktoun and Margaret Barnes); died in Apr 1748 in Scotland.

    Notes:

    XII. Thomas Wallace, second son of William, who acquired the lands of Cairnhill. He married, in 1710, Lillias, daughter of William Cuninghame of Craigends, by whom he had four sons :
    1, William, of Cainihill, whose male line is now extinct.
    2. John, of Cessnock and Kelly, who is now represented
    by his son, Robert Wallace late of Kelly.* He was
    M.P. for Greenock in the Reform Parliament.

    Thomas married Lilias Cuninghame [Cunningham] in 1710. Lilias (daughter of William (8th of Craigends) Cuninghame [Cunningham] and Christian Colquhoun) was born on 17 Aug 1691; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. William (of Cairnhill) Wallace was born on 8 Jun 1711; was christened on 10 Jun 1711 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 16 Nov 1763.
    2. John (of Kelly and Neilstounside) Wallace was born in 1713; was christened on 15 Sep 1716 in Craigie, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland; died in 1805 in Kelly, Ayrshire, Scotland.
    3. Margaret Wallace was born on 1 Apr 1714; was christened on 8 Apr 1714 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland; and died.
    4. Christian Wallace was born on 26 May 1712; was christened on 27 May 1712 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland; and died.

  1. 8.  William Wallace, of Overkirktoun was born in 1645 in Scotland (son of William Wallace, of Drumgrain & later of Neilstounside and Elizabeth Stewart, Heiress of Neilstonside & Drumgrain); died on 8 Aug 1713.

    Notes:

    1 - William Wallace, merchant in Glasgow, who acquired the lands of Overkirktoun, in the parish of Neilstoun. He had two sons, John and Thornns. John purchased Ellerslie from the Craigie family, and left an only daughter, married to Archibald Campbell of Succoth ; but the male representation of the family went to XII. Thomas Wallace, second son of William.

    2 - William, the second son, a merchant in Glasgow, acquired the lands of Over-Kirkton and others in the parish of Neilston, which he sold in 1690. He married, and had three sons, John, Thomas, and Michael.
    In the testament of John Wallace, founder of Wallace Hall School, in the county of Dumfries, dated in 1723, are named as patrons of the institution, "John Wallace of Elderslie, Thomas Wallace of Cairnhill, and Michael Wallace, merchant in Glasgow, brothers-german."
