    (Research):That James Dawes (11) is the son of James Dawes (1) is not proven

    James William Dawes the natural son of John Dawes, from whom he inherited the Rock Spring estate in Hanover. It is not clear whether James William Dawes was a man of colour: his mother is given as 'Agnes Valentine deceased' in the will of John Dawes.

    James William Dawes and his wife Sarah had three children baptised in Hanover, Jamaica: Isabella (born 18/10/1790, baptised 06/10/1790); John (born 16/10/1791, baptised 25/08/1792); AND WILLIAM (BORN 31.07/1794 and baptised 10/02/1795).

    James William Dawes died 1849 aged 82, in Melksham Wiltshire (Born c1767, presumably in Jamaica)

    1. Basilia Dawes was born on 12 Mar 1765; was christened on 22 May 1765 in Hanover, Jamaica; died in 1849.

    Notes:

    Resident slave-owner in Jamaica. Father-in-law of Charles James Sholto Douglas and although reportedly also father-in-law of the latter's son James Sholto Douglas (q.v.), the father of James Sholto Douglas's wife must have in fact been a second James Dawes of Rockspring. James Dawes's daughter Basilia Dawes had first married Richard Quarrell, who d. c. 1751.
