    DANIEL DUREE', b. 17 Aug 1831, mar 23 Apr 1854, Lucinda C. Crooks, b.Apr 1832, dau. of Dr. William B. Crooks and Martha C. Johnston.Daniel was first a farmer and moved to Hardin County, Kentucky, withhis father. In 1850 he was employed on the farm of John Irwin, hisstep-mother's son. He then followed flat boating on the Ohio andMississippi rivers until he married. After studying for the practiceof medicine which was not followed, he worked at the carpenter'strade. (Civil War) On 25 Sep 1861, he enlisted as a private inCompany A, 14th Regiment of volunteers, and took part in the battlesof Winchester, Antietam, Fredericksburg and others. He was wounded atthe Battle of Fredericksburg and spent time in the hospital atWashington, D.C. During some of this time his wife joined him as anurse until Aug. 1862. He was discharged 13 Feb 1863. Upon returningto civilian life, Daniel was employed in a dry goods store inBridgeton, Indiana, and operated his own grocery store from 1871 untilit burned in 1878. He then ran a similar store in Elizabethtown,Kentucky, for one year. He was appointed Postmaster in Bridgeton andheld that position for a number of years, with the exception of theCleveland administration. He also was a Justice of the Peace from1868 to 1872, and continued in the general merchandise business untilretirement. Daniel d 2 Dec 1904 at Bridgeton, and his wife on 4 Dec1914.

    "DANIEL DUREE"
    "..., so he entered upon the trade of a carpenter, which he followeduntil the breaking out of the Civil War. At the first call for troopshe responded promptly and enlisted in Company A, Fourteenth IndianaInfantry, as a private in the three months service. However, heafterward entered the service for three years, and was at once sent tothe front.
    Early in July of 1861, our subject received his first baptism of rebelfire at the battle of Rich Mountains. Afterwards, he participated inthe engagements of Green Brier, Huntsville, Ramley (Va.), Columbus(Md.), Winchester (Va.), and at Strausburg, after he was in camp atWinchester. Here his wife joined him and was most helpful inadministering to the wants of the sick of wounded soldiers, and hereshe had some experience in real warfare. The Rebels drove the Unionsoldiers out of their quarters and they compelled to retreat toWilliamsport, a distance of thirty-six miles. All this distance shewas exposed to murderous fire from rebel guns, but she was as brave asany soldier in the ranks. She afterward remained for some time as anurse in the hospital at Hagertown, and August 1, 1862, returned toher home at Bridgeton.
    Among other engagements in which our subject participated may bementioned the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. In the last engagement he was wounded in the right hand and wasobliged to to to the hospital at Washington. Being unfit for furtherservice he was discharged February 13, 1863.     Note: Daniel was a brother to Martha Duree Elkins and brother-n-lawto William H. Elkins. His wife Lucinda also served her country as aNURSE beginning by joining her husband at Camp Winchester in Virginia,and was involved in the retreat of the Union Soldiers to Williamsport,Virginia. Here she became experienced in real warfare. The rebelsdrove the Union soldiers out of their quarters and they were compelledto retreat to Williamsport, a distance of thirty-six miles. All thisdistance she was exposed to the murderous fire from the rebel guns,but she was as brave as any soldier in the ranks. She continued as anurse for some time at Hagerstown before returning home to Bridgeton,Indiana. Please see the Duree Family Book for family information onDaniel P. Duree. She was the daughter of Doctor William B. Crooks,and the sister to Doctor James Crooks of Bridgeton, Indiana. Danielmarried Lucinda C. Crooks Duree and they had nine children together.

He was bur in the Skillman Cemetery a shortdistance to the south in Russell Township, where his grave is markedwith a fieldstone. Grandson William T.S.     "Samuel was 6 years old in Mar 1781 when his father, aunt and unclewere slain by Indians while staying at the cabin near Moberly,Kentucky, where the two families had gone only a couple of daysbefore. He, his mother and sister Wyntie aged 3 years, werefortunately spared the dame fate and returned safely to the White OaksSpring Station. They remained there until Jan 1782, then accompaniedgrandfather Samuel Duree and his remaining family to live at the LowDutch Station in Mercer County.
    Samuel was raised from the age of 9 years by step-father Daniel Bantawho was his father's cousin. He remained in Mercer County aftermarriage, and may have gone to the Low Dutch Colony in Shelby Countywhen it was permanently settled in about 1795/96.
    Samuel was a farmer and subsequently moved to Hardin County where hewas taxed for farms of different size, horses and cattle, beginning in1810. While living there he served in the Third Regiment of StateMilitia from 1815 to 1820.
    Anne was left a share of the land covered by treasury warrantstotaling 4445 acres in Kentucky, together with a share of the personalestate, by her father's will made 06 June 1785 and proved in BerkeleyCounty.
    In 1822 Samuel moved across the Ohio River into Indiana. Created aState in 1816, it was then called an area of "vast forest justpenetrated in places by back woods settlers who were half hunters,half farmers." He purchased in Mar 1822, land in Parke County locatedin Section 1, township 15, range 6 west, containing 80 acres in thenortheast part of present Union Township, a little southwest ofPortland Mills. There he cleared some of the land and farmed until1854. His appointment as a Justice of the Peace in Parke County wasrecorded 5 May 1828. On 17 Feb 1854, the land was sold to Joseph R.Reddick, less half an acre where a graveyard had been established. Afurther deed was made 7 July 1856 to Thomas J. Slavens.
    Samuel and his wife subsequently moved to Keokuk County, Iowa, wheresons Jacob and Daniel had homes. He died 4 Jan 1857 and was the firstinterment in the Pennington Cemetery in Hayesville. Administration onhis estate was granted 11 June 1858 in Parke County, Indiana, to sonDavid who filed an inventory of certain notes due amounting to$1688.74 in the hands of son Daniel in Iowa. Because no assets werein his possession, David was discharged 14 may 1861, and Daniel actedas administrator in Iowa.
    Anne subsequently lived with son Peter in Missouri where she died 11Jan 1860. She was buried in the Pickett-Duree Cemetery, somersetTownship, Putnam County. the birth dates of the children were takenfrom Samuel's Bible." Transcribed by, SLJuhl, 10 Aug 2005]

    "... Samuel grew to manhood in Kentucky, where he married and reared alarge family of children. He was greatly opposed to slavery, and in1818, to get away from the influence of that institution, he came withhis family to Indiana, where he settled near Portland Mills, in ParkeCounty. Later he went to Keokuk County, Iowa, where he died early inthe '50's (1850's). Of his seven children, two are living, one inMercer County, Mo., and the other in Ohio.
