Andrew Park was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia per his baptismrecord. His headstone at Bowlesburg Cemetery, Silvis, Illinois doesnot mention his place of birth."
[Transcribed 07 March 2007, SLJuhl, compiler]
Note: The headstone certainly does not list the place of birth. Please note the (;) between New Hampshire;b. 1839 per head stone thatdelineates the place of birth and the date reference. I have addedthe source now for clarification of where the information of birthcame from. See the source below. Some one in the early familycertainly believed that New Hampshire was the actual place of birth, and since Andrew Jr. Park was still living when the book waspublished, surely the information must have been from either Andrewhimself or his immediate family and there were no later correctionsadded to the publication. The information that Edna Waller offers isinteresting and would seem to indicate a mistake may have been made, but though baptisms can be a close indicator of places of birth,Baptisms do not indicate actual births in the same area as the churchnecessarily, only birth certificates do that. Until a birthcertificate appears or a document where Andrew gives his actual placeof birth is noted, it would seem that there are two possible places ofbirth for him at the present.

PARK, Andrew, for many years actively identified with the coal miningindustry, now lives retired, enjoying the comforts of a very pleasanthome, at Viola, Mercer county, Ill., where he owns propertyaccumulated through his own industry. Andrew park was born atManchester, New Hampshire, October 3, 1839, a son of Andrew and Allice(Agnes) (Irwin) Park. Andrew Park, the father, was born in Scotlandand was young when he came to America and took up his residence atManchester, N.H., where he continued to live until 1852, when he movedto Rock Island, Illinois. Being a practical miner he followed miningas an occupation until the time of his death. He married Alice(Irwin) and they had three sons and seven daughters born to them, ofwhom Andrew was the youngest, a sister, Mrs. Ellen Lewis, who lives atMoline, Ill., with him, being the only survivors of this family.Andrew Park was eleven years old when his father came with his familyto Rock Island County, and as soon as his school days were over hebecame a miner and was working in Rock Island County when the CivilWar broke out. Company A, of the Thirty-seventh Illinois VolunteerInfantry, was mainly recruited at Rock Island and he enlisted in thiscompany for three years, the commander of his regiment being Col.Julius White. After his first term of enlistment expired, hereenlisted in the same regiment, at Brownsville, Tex., and his secondenlistment did not expire until May 16, 1866, when he was honorablydischarged. He returned home by way of New Orleans and from there upthe Mississippi river to St. Louis, Mo., and thence by railroad toRock Island, reaching that city June 2, 1866. Although he was a braveand faithful soldier, never shirking any duty, he was never eitherwounded or made a prisoner, and returned to peacful pursuitspractically unharmed. During his service he took part in many battlesand mong them are included: Pea Ridge, Cape Girardeau, Vicksburg andFort Blakeley, together with all the skirmishes and long marches ofhis regiment. He is a member of Viola Post, No. 440, G.A.R.
After Andrew Park came back to Illinois he resimed mining and followedit until he retired from active labor, he began at the bottom andthrough his industry and reliability climbed until he became a minemanager, a position of great responsibility, the comfort and evenlives of many men frequently being more or less in his charge. OnAugust 1, 1866, at Harper House, Rock Island, Andrew Park was marriedto Miss Johanna Hunter, who was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania(Pa), July 23, 1844, a daughter of Elliott and Catherine Hunter. Herparents were born in Pennsylvania and came to Rock Island County in1852, where the father followed farming. To Mr. and Mrs. Park sixchildren were born, four sons and two daughters, and the survivorsare: Elliott, who is a farmer living near Moline; Erwin, who isresiding at Moline; Catherine, who is the wife of Asbury Griffen, living at Viola, Mercer County; John, who is living at Peoria; andIra, who is residing at Rock Island. Mr. and Mrs. Park have beenblessed in many ways and not the least of these has been thepossession of a creditable family which in the second generation hasincreased until they have 189 grandchildren. They are members of thePresbyterian church. Mr. Park is no active politician, but is arepublican in his views."

Dedicated, this 18th day of July, 1992, a replacement headstone tomark the final resting places of JOHN FINLEY GRIFFIN and his wife JANEGILES, given with love and gratitude by their numerous descendants.Remarks by Rev. Glen W. Bocox of First United Methodist Church ofMoline, Headstone by Moline Monument company. Excerpts from thenarratives: Page 1: "Six days from now, July 24th, will mark the onehundred sixty fourth anniversary of the date young Jane Giles marriedJohn Finley Griffin in Pekin, Washington County, Indiana. No oneknows now whether or not they were admonished by the preacher to "goforth and multiply", but forth they went and multiply they mostcertainly did. We have only pieces of their story. They didn't writein diarys (diaries) or keep journals for future generations. Theysimply lived their lives as best they could and left it up to thedoggedness and ingenuity of those who came after to search andconjecture. The following pages contain thumbnail sketches of themand the people they came from. These stories are not complete norwill they ever be (perhaps), but the joy for those who search lies inthe discovery of small bits and pieces of information to add to thewhole. Page 3: THE GRIFFIN LINE - JOHN FINLEY GRIFFIN, was born inNC in 1805 (according to census records), but we have no definiteproof as to the exact area of his birth nor the names of his parents. If they followed the old country habit of naming children ( etc...),his parents may have been William and Margaret (much conjecture isstated here)...etc. The Griffins may have lived near the Giles familyin Randolph County, NC, because Finley (as he was called), along withbrothers Robert and George, appeared in Washington County, IN, aboutthe time the Giles' moved there. He married Jane Giles in Pekin inthat county in 1828 when he was 23 and she was 18. they settled in ornear Pekin where her grandfather William Bowman was a majorlandholder. Their first three children, Marth, William and Margaret, were born there.
In 1833, the young family, along with Finley's brother George andJane's sister and brother-in-law, Polly and William Porter, moved tothe Moline area which had been opened up for settlement by thegovernment after the defeat of Black Hawk and his followers. Finley'sfirst land purchase was from the government in 18334, a 400 acretract, paying about one dollar an acre. He sold it the following yearfor ten dollars an acre. this tract was located where sixteenthstreet runs today, south from 23rd (Avenue of the Cities) Avenue and awidth of several blocks on either side. This area was later known asStewartville and was and is home to some of our Park relatives.
Finley discovered coal on the south face of the Moline bluffs, overlooking the Rock River, and opened what was then the second coalmine in the area. This along with farming, became the business andmainstay of his and James's growing family. The home site in Coaltown was located just south and a little west of the present JohnDeere Administration Center, according to the Hunter genealogy, written by Allyn Hunter.
By the time the Rock Island County census was taken in 1855, Finley atage 50 was a man of property and substance. His and Jane's childrennumbered ten and were beginning to be married, five of them toHunters. Life for that time must have been good. However, on 6January 1860, at the age of 55, John Finley Griffin died. He left awife who, unable to read or write, still had to raise the youngerchildren and try to keep things going.
He didn't live to see five of his sons go off to serve in the CivilWar, nor to bear the grief of knowing one of them would never return.Jane did, and struggled through as women alone have always done. Wehave no record of her last years, but from the way her children turnedout, she must have been a strong woman and role model. She died in1871, aged 61."
