There is no doubt what so ever that the LaBaw, Stout, Burk, Smith,Douglass, French, and all of the families listed below in Indiana arerelated.
I am a direct descendant of all of them. My grandmother's maiden namewas Douglass and my mother's maiden name was Clore and my father'ssurname was Elkins. The Douglass intermarried with LaBaw, French,Reynolds, Smith, Redenbaugh, Sparks, Burk. The Clore's intermarriedwith the Martin, Otterback, Rector families. My father's Elkinsfamily intermarried with the Clore's, Sparks, Rector, Deer families. My folks were third cousins, so I am related by descent to all of thefamilies.
My mother's (Joyce Lorraine Clore Elkins) research was exemplary andconcise. She knew many of the older family members as well in almosteveryone of the above families. Mother gathered source informationfrom those family members and then backed it up with biographies, obituaries, census records, marriage & death records, etc.... thesources are so multiple that I have not listed all of them in mynotes, but be assured there is a reference source somewhere amongstall of the many volumes of her work that I now own throughinheritance. I have endeavored over the last ten years to also updaterecords when time allows. When I do update, the sources are usuallyincluded in the notes of the person being updated in my Family TreeMaker program. The families are so multiple in origin with hundredsof branch families that putting all of the information into thecomputer has been a work in progress, and it continues even now. There are more than 12 books on the different families that I haveworked on so far already at the Crawfordsville Public Library.

LA BAW FAMILY RECORD--DATED AUGUST 1956:
WE ARE INDEBTED TO CORA BYERS HOOVER, GRAND DAUGHTER OF SARAH LA BAWREMSTER FOR MUCH OF THE DATA COLLECTED UP TO THE TIME OF HER DEATH IN1941. SOME YEARS LATER (c. 1960 A.D.) THIS MATERIAL WAS PLACED INTHE HANDS OF A COMMITTEE OF THREE WHO WERE INSTRUCTED TO DO WHAT THEYCOULD TOWARD BRINGING THE LA BAW FAMILY RECORD UP TO DATE AND READYFOR PRINTING. WE ARE ALSO INDEBTED TO MYRTLE LA BAW NEWMAN, DAUGHTEROF JOHN LA BAW, FOR DILIGENT WORK TO BRING THIS RECORD UP TO DATE.THE BOOK HAS BEEN PRINTED BY LUCILLE CAVE BUCKNER, GRAND DAUGHTER OFLEWIS L. LA BAW, AND HER HUSBAND ROLAND K. BUCKNER OF INDIANAPOLIS,MARION COUNTY, INDIANA." (Page 2, Para. 1) The La Baw Family Record,August 1956.
Information in this book was obtained at the La Baw Family Reunions inFountain County Indiana until around 1974 when Lucille C. Buckner ofMarion County, Indianapolis, Indiana in a letter dated Nov. 14, 1977to Joyce Lorraine Clore Elkins of Montezuma, Parke County, Indianastated that the family reunions were no longer happening do todisinterest in having them any more. So, this is a very valuablefamily record that was kept by a family committee for many years by,Myrtle La Baw Newman, Lillian La Baw Clark, and Anna Leak La Baw. Thecompiler has a copy, and according to Joyce Lorraine Clore Elkinsthere is also a copy in the Indianapolis State Library as well. Thebook was compiled by the three authors in August of 1956. Asupplement was done at the family reunion on August 28, 1960 withcorrections. The compiler, Sandra Lee Elkins Juhl, (daughter of JoyceLorraine Clore Elkins) also has the supplement of that date.[Compiled by, SLJuhl, 08 Nov 2005]
"The first generation of La Baw's, of which we have any record, is thefamily of David L. and Sarah Barkalow La Baw's. We know of only twochildren born to them, Sarah and Benjamin B. La Baw's. Sarah becameSarah La Baw's Anderson and that is all we know of her." (Page 3,Para. 1) The La Baw's Family Record, August 1956.

I have endeavored to compile the book, The La Baw's Family Record, asclose to it's original form as possible. Where dates of individualsor places of birth were not given it was sometimes possible toapproximate those dates by use of abbreviated phrases such as: About(Abt), Between (Bet.), Possibly, or Probably; However, there weremany though where it was not possible to interject an approximateplace or date. In those cases though if you are doing research youmight try the census records by following the nearest oldest relativewho does have the information of dates and places last known. Also,it was assumed by the committee that unless the actual place wasgiven, ex. California, Florida, etc.. that the births took place inIndiana. I would like to point out that this book is not in print anymore, and is the reason I have data based it into my computer softwareprogram so that it can be printed in it's entirety for the future. The information from the updated supplement has also been included.SLJuhl, 25 Dec 2005.

    2. Sarah Labaw was born about 1810 in Montgomery County, Ohio; died on 14 Jul 1886 in Shawnee Township, Fountain County, Indiana.

  3. 6.  *Jonathan Crane was born in 1775 in New Jersey Per Two Sources; Warren County, Ohio Per One Source. (son of *Mr. Crane and Mrs. Crane); died in 1864 in Fountain County, Indiana.

    Notes:

Please see Benjamin F. Crane's biography notes for more details. Fromthe information in all the available resources that I've studied, thebest dates for the families migration to Indiana is between 1830 -1835. Probably, the date is closer to the year of 1830 due to theland purchases.

Also, there is a descripency as to where Jonathan Crane was born. Twosources say he was born in New Jersey (ex. 1850 census in FountainCounty, Indiana), and then in Benjamin F. Crane's Fountain County,Indiana biography it states his birth is in Warren County, Ohio.Frankly, since Jonathan and Kesiah were still living in the 1850census and gave their information to the census taker themselves, itis more likely that they were both born in New Jersey as stated, wentto Ohio with their parents, and then from there to Indiana as adultsafter Hannah's birth in 1829.
