"ROCKVILLE, INDIANA, TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER, WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 04, 1908,GRANGE CORNER, INDIANA: Friday afternoon at the Rock Crusher, locatedon Hiram Allens farm occurred the accident which resulted in the deathof John Farner. Mr. Farner with other workmen were blasting rockusing dynamite. They had just put in a charge and he thought the fusehad gone out and began to venture near and was warned by hiscompanions. As he neared the hole where the charge had been placed, the explosion occurred. It lifted him six feet off the ground, blewone arm into shreds and tore the fingers off his other hand anddestroyed his eyesight. As his wife is very low with consumption itis feared the shock may be fatal to her. He was taken to the home ofHarry Allen who lives near the Crusher. After a few hours of untoldagony, death relieved him of his suffering. When his wife was told ofhis death she replied it would not be long before she would be withhim. Elkins, born in Jackson County, Indiana, (CivilWar Record) on March 01, 1836. We find him in the 1850 Jackson Co.,IN. Census living with the Amayiah Elkins family and next door toWilliam Elkins (first settler in what is now Brown County, Indiana).Amayiah is believed to be the son of William Elkins. Our William H.Elkins is not a son of Amayiah Elkins, but he was possibly living withhis Uncle Amayiah (See census records kept in the ElkinsVolumes)(Note: Confirmed that William H. Elkins was living in AmayiahElkins household in 1850 census, SLJuhl.) He was not found in thehousehold of his mother and step-father James C. Graham in 1850. Nonames are mentioned except head of household in the 1840 census, sohave been unable to locate them. Possibly living with other families. Seems likely that William H. Elkins married about age 17/19 as hisfirst child was born in 1855. No record of marriage (to Margaret) hasbeen found, (Update, found record of marriage of Margaret Cavender toWilliam H. Elkins and confirmed date of 1853 and Jackson County, 26Nov 2004, SLJuhl.) but death certificate of son, Franklin A. Elkinssays his mother was, Margaret Cavender. Can only assume that Williamand Margaret were married in Jackson Co., IN. and their two daughters,Mary L. and Isabel were born near Court land, IN., which is in JacksonCounty. They were living in Jackson Co., Hamilton Twp. in 1860'sCensus record. Margaret died (no grave found) between 1861 and 1869in Jackson County or Putman County, Indiana. "WILLIAM FARNER AND KATHERINE DAVIS OF SYLVANIA, INDIANA
William and Katherine (Catherine), were listed as parents on twomarriage applications in the court house in Fountain County,Covington, Indiana, by John Farner, father of Gladys Farner Elkins. Ibelieve William to be the son of Conrad Farner from Virginia, whosettled in Liberty Township, Parke County, Indiana. Only information(not proven though) is from 1850 Liberty Township, Parke County,Indiana census. William was either a son or a very near relative.William is also mentioned with wife Katherine and children in the 1870census. Only William and children listed in the 1880 census. Havenot been able to locate William and Katherine's other children, exceptpossibly William Farner of Montezuma, Parke County, Indiana, who wouldbe a son of William and a brother of John's. Gladys only remembershaving been told that William was a half brother to her father John." Which is important that it tells us William was married before hemarried Catherine probably (SLJuhl).
"Only two relatives were ever known to Gladys Farner Elkins: WILLIAMFARNER of Montezuma, Parke County, Indiana and CLARENCE S. FARNER, whois suppose to be a cousin who was born in Tangier, Parke County,Indiana, Liberty Township, and who lived in Saint Bernice, VermillionCounty, Indiana." "I talked with him before he passed away and hesaid he never knew who his parents were. I have put their historiesin these pages as not proven, but maybe some day they will be."
"This history will begin with the proven family of John H. Farner, sonof William and Katherine Davis Farner, and continue with what is knownof the Farner Families of Parke County in Liberty Township, and alldata that has been collected to the present time. (1992)" [Written byJoyce Lorraine Clore Elkins, 1992] [Transcribed by, SLJuhl, compiler,22 June 2005]

The abbreviation Wm is acommon short hand for the name William that is sometimes used inAmerica. The different name changes can make it confusing in doinggenealogy searches unless you are aware of the shortened abbreviationsfor names and the suttle surname changes.
