    Notes:

SOURCE NOTE: I have been going over the notes of Joyce L. CloreElkins and those of Cathi Clore Frost and comparing them for some sortof collaberation on where the family was located. It would appearthat the farm land bordered both Parke and Montgomery Counties andoverlapped into both. So, it has been very difficult to determineexactly which county is the birth and death counties of individuals inmany cases. Also, in many cases, where one of them is married in acounty it's not necessarily where they lived in a county and viceversa. There may be some errors in locations of births and deaths. If you should decide a mistake was made, please feel free to contactme: sljuhl1234@yahoo.com or at

Howard and Margaret Deer Clore had eleven children, but only eight areknown at the present time.

SOURCE Note: Please see the biography of son Henry Harrison Clore.See excerpt below:
"Howard Clore was educated in the subscription schools of Kentucky, which he never attended more than 6 days after he was 10. On Dec. 12,1839, he married Margaret Deer, whose father, John Deer, was a nativeof Virginia, removed to Kentucky, and finally located in MontgomeryCounty, Indiana where he entered land at an early day. Mrs. Clore wasborn in Boone County, Ky and died November 6, 1856. After his firstmarriage Mr. Clore located on the farm which he now operates on Sec.16, Howard Township, Parke County. No improvements had then beenplaced upon the farm, which has since been developed entirely by him.In 1868 he built the large and imposing house where he now lives. Before this his home had been an old-fashioned double log house. Hisfarm comprises 520 acres, which with the exception of 40 acres, is allin one body. On New Years Day, 1859, Howard Clore was again married, the lady being Sarah Deer, sister of his first wife. After her deathhe married Mrs. Elizabeth Frame. He had 11 children by his firstunion, 5 by his second. Those living are: Amanda Ellen, who lives athome; Henry Harrison, subject of this sketch; Sarah L; Howard, Jr. whois a farmer in Lucas County, Iowa; and Whitfield, who is engaged inpartnership with his brother Howard in stock-raising in Lucas Co,where they have 850 acres of land. In 1852 Mr. Clore went to Iowa andentered about 700 acres of land. Mr. Clore, Sr. has his farmsuperintended by another and is not actively engaged himself onaccount of his age. He has one of the finest farms in the county, allupland. He has a large amount of stock on the place and in the pasthas raised considerable for the market. His home was built at a costof $8000 in 1868. Mr. Clore is honored by all who know him and thoughnot a church member, has a strong love for everything relating toreligion, especially that inclining toward Universalism."

This is a record of land purchases in Indiana while Israel was livingin Kentucky. "When he (meaning, Israel) moved to Kentucky in 1811, hewas about 32 (years) and had three children. By the time he moved toIndiana, another 28 years had passed making him about 60 years old,and he had a total of nine children that all moved as well. Although,he took out seven land patents in Indiana totaling 760 acres betweenthe years of 1824-1834, Israel must have transferred ownership of thisland to his children and "retired" as he is not found in the 1840census. He lived with his daughter Lucinda and her husband BenjaminGarland at the time of the 1850 census. His sister Margaret'shusband, John Deer, began purchasing land in Indiana at the same time, but they moved between 1825 when John Deer last appears in BooneCounty, Kentucky tax records; In 1830 is when John Deer appears inthe census in Montgomery County, Indiana. According totradition,...Israel Clore walked to Indiana carrying only his gun tomake land purchases. When he had saved up enough money, he would makethe journey to purchase more land. At the time he sold out inKentucky he owned over 300 acres there as well according to taxrecords. ...Israel's land is now a museum farm having been in the samefamily that purchased it from him. Although the frame house was builtafter Israel sold the land, the LOG CABIN MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT BYISRAEL." E-mail Per Cathi Clore Frost = cathiclorefrost@comcast.net Dated: 23 March 2006. Excerpt from biography of Henry Harrison Clore, grandson, and son ofHoward Clore, see notes: "Israel Clore was of German descent. The twobrothers of his wife served in the War of 1812. Israel Clore, soonafter his marriage, removed to Boone County, Kentucky, where he boughtland and settled at a very early day. Of his children, two are stillliving, namely Howard and Simeon, who live in Montgomery County,Indiana. The others were Joel and Melinda, Lucinda, Uriel andBerryman. The last two died within the last year. In 1837, the fatherof Israel Clore removed to Indiana, locating in Montgomery County. Hehad also made a number of trips to his state, where he entered land ofthe Government. He was a hard worker and whenever he could get alittle money ahead he would come to Indiana and enter land, sometimeswalking all the way from Boone County. He was drafted for the War of1812, but hired a substitute. His death occurred August 18, 1854 andthat of his wife April 17, 1870. He was first a Jacksonian Democrat, and afterward became a Whig. He was a member of the Hard Shell BaptistChurch. To each of his children he gave a good farm about 160 acres." Want an Autograph of President Jackson?
Several Genuine Signatures of Nation's Seventh
President in Possession of Wayne Clore.
    By Dick Haislet
Many persons read within the last two weeks an article in a nationalweekly, a story about the famous Hermitage located 12 miles out ofNashville, Tenn., and its equally famous owner, the hard fightingguntoting hero of New Orleans and the seventh presiden of the UnitedStates.
This week President Andrew Jackson came to light in Lucas county. Theother evening Wayne Clore, who owns a farm six miles north of Lucasbrought several old land patents into the office of The CharitonNewspapers.
Written on sheep skin parchment, these five old land patents ranged inages from 126 years to 116 years old, three bearing Jackson'ssignature.
The titles themselves were taken out by Clore's great grandfather onland about 45 miles north of Indianapolis, Ind. Clore who justrecently was sent the titles, suspects there might be quite a fewmore, as the earlier Clore family at one time owned some 3,000 acresin that vicinity.
The earliest of the five land patents is dated Feb. 6, 1824, and inone place bears what appears to be President James Monroe's signature.
However, where the final signature should be afixed, time seems tohave obliterated the name. Clore says he assumes it is legal, as thetitle has the seal of the United States, and is counter signed by theCommissioner of General Land office.
Before the Homestead Act, all such land, as purchased by Clore'sancestors, had to be negotiated for at public auction, with theminimum price set by the U. S. Government at two dollars an acre.
These were public land ceded to the Government, and were originallyused to retire Federal war debts; or were given as a bonus to veteransof the Revolutionary War or their families. As claims for public landdecreased, the government found itself with more and more land, anddecided (with a series of bills) on the public auction method of itsdisposal.
The states in which public land lay, by law could not tax it, orinterfere with its disposal by the United States.
Clore's great grandfather, Israel, farmed in Boone county, Ky., andit's very probable that he never saw his Indiana land holdings. Clorebelieves he either purchased the land for his children or morepossibly, for land speculation which was quite popular at that time.
Old Israel Clore seems to have passed down some of his shrewdness tohis sons, as to the value of land because Clore's grandfather, Howard, made land purchased in the present day Lucas county area. UnlikeIsrael, grandfather Clore made the trip to Iowa from Indiana onhorseback himself and personally picked out his land before buying. This was about 1850.
Land purchased in this area amounted to about 1,000 acres, but whenClore's father and uncles came out from Indiana to claim it they foundquite a good deal of it had gone to squatters by default, and so theydivided up the remaining land themselves. The Wayne L. Clore farmtoday is 440 acres.
So, if you ever run across an old land patent don't dismiss it as aninteresting piece of paper because it might contain history thatconcerns you." SOURCE: Cathi Clore Frost, www.RootsWeb.com; 28January 2008, SLJuhl, compiler.

Michael Clore. In my article in the William and Mary Quarterly, Vol.XXVI, 181, I endeavor to assign certain children to this Michael. I amsatisfied now that all the children given there were the children ofMichael Clore, son of John Clore. There is then no record of thisMichael, son of George Clore, following the probate of this will. Heprobably died young.
    Page 23-24:
"Michael Clore (son of John Clore) was born December 1, 1746, diedDecember 7, 1817, in Madison Co., Va. The title "Big Mike", applied tohim, to distinguish him from other Michael Clores, suggests that hewas a man of large size. The Quarter-Master General's report forDistrict of Charlottesville shows that he was paid for his services asblacksmith, October - December, 1781. Tradition claims that he was agunsmith. These services qualify his descendants for admission intothe patriotic societies. He was also a cabinet-maker. The Cloresliving near Madison, Va., today, furniture makers, may have receivedtheir craft by direct inheritance from him. The writer has a pair ofhalf-round mahogany tables, made in very substantial manner and stillin good condition. These tables were in possession of the Clore familynear Madison for more than a century. They are clearly of theHeppelwhite style which was the vogue about 1780. The writer believesthat in all probability they were made by Michael Clore himself.Michael Clore was one of the executors of his father's will. In 1782he was taxed for 185 acres, in 1786 for 48 acres. In Madison Co., Va.,he was taxed for 186 acres down to 1814, in which year his land wasdescribed as lying 3 miles east of the Court House and on the RobinsonRiver, which seems to identify it as part of the land which MichaelClore bought of Christopher Moyer, 1744. [A handwritten note, probablymade by Delma Carpenter, Sr. says this is "a bad guess" and in factMichael purchased the land rather than inherited it.] The land is alsodescribed as joining land of John Clore, dec'd. In 1814, Michael Clorewas taxed for 500 acres, "from Weaver's Estate", lying on the RobinsonRiver, and in 1815 and 1816 for a total of 686 acres. Michael Cloremarried Margaret Weber (Weaver) in 1769, who was born December 19,1752 (according to the Hebron Birth Register) or December 21, 1752, asgiven by tradition. She died November 24, 1842. She was the daughterof John Weber by his wife Barbara Kaffer (Cafer, etc.), daughter ofMichael Kaffer of the 1717 colony. John Weaver was the son of PeterWeaver who died 1763. Michael Clore and wife Margaret had 16 childrenof whom the first five are recorded in the Birth Register of HebronChurch."

The newsletter Beyond Germanna, Vol. 11, No. 4, July 1999, Publishedand edited by John Blankenbaker, PO Box 120, Chadds Ford PA 19317-0120has an article on the "Parentage of Michael ("Big Mike") Clore".Authors of the article [John Blankenbaker, Nancy (Moyers) Dodge andCathleen "Cathi" (Clore) Frost concluded that, based on land andbaptismal evidence, this Michael Clore was most likely the son ofGeorge Clore and Barbara Weaver. In Germanna Record #10, he wasidentified as the son of John Clore. A letter written by John Clore ofCrawfordsville, IN in 1895 to his cousin Howard D Clore of Norwood, IA(in possession of Cathi Frost of St. Helens, OR) also identifiesMichael's father as John Clore. In a later article published in BeyondGermanna [look up date], I (Cathi Clore Frost) concluded that "BigMike" was indeed the son of John Clore. The land evidence of the firstarticle proved to be inacurate. George also had a son of that name butcircumstantial evidence indicates he must have died without heirs, most likely young and unmarried.

Madison Co., VA Will Book 3, p 330 [Typescript by Jan Creek]:
I Michael Clore of the County of Madison Virginia, do make this mylast will and testament in manner following to Wit -
First, I lend to my wife Margaret Clore all my estate both real andpersonal during her widowhood, upon condition that whatever she makesfrom my said Estate, be equally divided among all my children andtheir heirs, but in the event of her not being disposed to divide suchproceeds equally among them it is my will that she shall pay to mychildren and their heirs two thirds of what my land and Negroes wouldhire and rent for - but no such rent or hire shall be required unlessshe shall actually make such unequal distribution of the proceeds ofsaid Estate at any time. ----
Secondly - After the death of my wife Margaret Clore I wish and dowill that my Estate both real and personal be equally divided amongall my children and their heirs in the following manner, that is tosay I wish my Negroes to be divided and remain in the family, unlessany of them should turn out to be bad and troublesome, in that eventmy Executors hereafter to be named, and my wife and children mayconclude and dispose of them at any time, as they may see cause. Mytract of Land being small, whereon I now live, I will to dispose of bymy Executors at publick sale and the money arising from such sale tobe equally divided among all my children - Of the personal propertywhich I have now in possession, my three daughters, Rhoda, Julia andSally, who now live with me are to have one bed and furniture each, some pewter ware, flax wheel, pot & pan each, which they have now inpossession, and one cow and calf each. I also leave to William my sonone horse, bridle & Saddle of the same value of those my other sonshad and one cow and calf. The balance of my personal property notbefore mentioned to be sold by my Executors and the money arising fromthe sale thereof to be equally divided among all my children and theirheirs. My mountain tract of Land, which is one third of five hundredacres, I wish my Executors to dispose of in the best manner they canand the money to be equally divided among all my children and theirheirs - I have heretofore advanced to my son John, now deceased, sixtydollars - to my son Jeremiah twenty dollars - to my son Levi twentydollars and to my son Israel twenty dollars - all which sums they areto account for in the general division of my Estate, as so muchreceived by them, but they are not to pay interest on the same - Inthe division of my Estate I include the children of my son John in theplace of their Father, that is that they are to have one fourteenthpart after deducting Sixty dollars heretofore advanced to theirFather; one half of which fourteenth part I give to James Clore (whois subject to fits) and the other half to the balance of my said sonJohn's children. I will to my old Negro man Moses seven dollars to bepaid out of my Estate by my Executors - I appoint my Son in Law JohnFishback and my Son Gideon Clore Executors of this my last will andtestament - Should they differ in opinion at any time in the executionof this my Will, I wish them to refer each point in dispute to WilliamBooton, Cornelius Carpenter & Robert Thomas whose descission I hopewill always be satisfactory.
