    "Captain Fred Douglas brought his family - then consisting of 4 girlsand 2 boys - to Espperance in 1898, arriving in (his ship) the "GraceDarling". He lived in an eight room house for ten years, where the Esperance Land Development Company was situated, north side of the present Esperance Post Office.

    Captain Fred built the big house Bayview in Dempster Street, his neice Agnes helped a lot"

    Susan was the Governess of the first four children, her parents were John
    Wellstead and Bridget Muir.
    Obituary: "A pioneer of the early days of Western Australia passed away on Friday last in the person of Mrs. Susan Rebecca Douglas, of Esperance, widow of the late Captain Frederick Douglas of Albany and Esperance. The deceased was born at Albany, and lived at Bremer Bay for many years. Her father, the late John Wellstead, had farming interests there. She married the late Captain Douglas at Albany at the time when he was master of the schooner Agnes, which was trading from Albany to Esperance and Eucla. Mrs Douglas was on board Agnes with her husband when she (Agnes) was wrecked off Bremer Bay, and later made many trips with him when he was master of the Grace Darling, trading between Fremantle and Adelaide. For the last 34 years, she had lived at Esperance and was a pioneer of the South Coast, where she endured many hardshipsduring the early days. She leaves two sons, four daughters and six grandchildren....the funeral took place on Saturday afternoon in the Methodist portion of the Karrakatta cemetery. The Rev. Eric H.O.Nye officiated at the graveside. The chief mourners were Messrs Robert and Frederick Douglas (sons), Captain Carl Douglas (step son), Messrs G.J Tracey (son in law), A.R. and F.G. Chapman and R.W.Beere (nephews) and Miss E. Douglas (niece). The pall bearers were Messrs W. Hughes, J Smith, and S Gibson (Esperance), J.C. Coxon (Norsemen), G.P Stevens, A.H. and H. Thorp, Junior, and C.J. McMullen. Among those present were J Tiley, Mesdames A. Welch, K Menzies, G Walker, J Clark, C. Christenson and L.J. Blackett and May and Gladys Walker....."
