RALPH W. DEXTER

NARROWSBURG: Ralph W. Dexter of Narrowsburg, a retired maintenance man of Right of Way for the Erie Railroad, having worked since 1928 at the age of 18 until retirement in 1972, and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 7, 2001 at the home. He was 90.

Son of Charles L. and Barbara Bebous Dexter, he was born December 20, 1910 in Cochecton in the same house where he lived during his lifetime.

He was a member, elder and trustee of the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church; a former president and longtime treasurer of the Lava Fire Department; a former committeeman for many years of the Sullivan County Extention Service; a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad - Maintenance of Right of Way; a member of the Cochecton Preservation Society and the treasurer and trustee of the Dexter Family Cemetery. He also owned and operated a Christmas tree farm for many years.

Survivors include his wife Wilburta at home; two sons, James of Herkimer, and William and wife Jennie of Narrowsburg; two daughters, Barbara Myer and husband Clifford of Milford, PA and Doris Roda and husband Warren of Otisville; a brother-in-law, Eugene Thalman of the state of Texas; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Elsie; a granddaughter, Eileen; three brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be held on Thursday, May 10, at 11:00 a.m., at the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jacob Wielhouwer will officiate.

Ralph married Wilburta Constance Cornwell on 5 Oct 1929. Wilburta (daughter of Wilbur Cornwell and Isabelle Bullivant) was born on 18 Jul 1908; died on 27 Feb 2002; was buried in Overlook Cemetery, Damascus, Wayne Co., PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

"After his father died, Charles moved to New Hampshire where he enlisted as a private on 12/4/1863 at Portsmouth in Company C, 5th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry. He was described as having hazel eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion, and was 5' 8 1/2" in height. Charles was wounded at the Battle of Petersburg on 6/17/1864 during General Grant's campaign against Richmond" (Civil War Military Service Record, Popielarz).

Charles married Katherena Karch on 7 Feb 1869. Katherena (daughter of Michael Karch and Mary Gier) was born on 24 Jan 1852 in Lagelhurst, Baden-Baden, Germany; died on 20 Jun 1941 in Milanville, Wayne Co., PA; was buried in Dexter Family Cemetery, Riverside, PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

"She remembered attending the funeral services for Abraham Lincoln held in New York City. Her family later moved to a farm in Wayne Co., PA across the river from Narrowsburg, NY.

Katherena was always active and made over 150 patchwork quilts which she gave to friends and relatives. she was a member of the Milanville Methodist Church.

After the death of her daughter, Beatrice Deighton, Katherena raised Beatrice's three children. The Milanville correspndent says, "Mrs. Dexter is not in good health, and the care of the children means a great addition to her work, but it will be a labor of love and the little ones will have a mother's tender care" (The Wayne Independent, 11/3/1915)."

Daniel owned a large amount of land in Damascus Twp. and after his death his land was surveyed in 1874 and divided into lots. He died without a will and his children as his heirs sold his land. His children acquired the following: 53 acres to Martha Jane, wife of Nelson Conklin; 25 acres to Julia Francis, wife of Gilbert Conklin; 108 acres to Katherena, wife of Charles R. Dexter; and two lots of 191 acres and 15 acres to James Dexter, Edward Dexter, and John D. Dexter (Wayne Co. Deed Books 40:227, 53:212, 54:296; 55:296; 55:390, 55:391, and 91:58). (Popielarz).

Daniel married Permelia Reynolds about 1840. Permelia (daughter of Jonathan Reynolds and Mary O'toole) was born on 24 Nov 1820 in Sullivan Co., NY; died on 24 Dec 1897 in Damascus, Wayne Co., PA; was buried in 1897 in Ts Dexter Cemetery, Damascus Twp., Wayne Co., PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
