  1. 1.  Lt.-Col. James Sutherland, 1st of Uppat was born in 1726; died on 23 May 1789 in Uppat House, Clyne, Sutherland, Scotland.

    Notes:

James's father was possibly William, 16th Earl of Sutherland; his mother is unknown. He retired from the Army as Lieut. Col. He served in several regiments 1747-1781 and named his second son George Sackville Sutherland after Lord George Sackville under whom he served at the Battle of Minden in 1759. James held important posts in the Sutherland family's estate and lived at Dunrobin Castle - all his children were born there. James was present with the 17th Earl and Countess of Sutherland in Bath, England where they went for health reasons after the death of their first child. The Earl and Countess died in Bath and James made arrangements for their bodies to be returned to Scotland. He was then nominated as Factor to the Tutors of the orphaned, infant Countess. After retirement from Dunrobin he lived at Uppat House a few miles further north from the Castle. He died there. Uppat House was destroyed by fire in 2007 but is being rebuilt by the son of the present Countess of Sutherland.
