Born Robertson went into thread manufacturing business with his brother and their factory was in England. In order for trade to go more smoothly they anglicised Robertson to Robinson.

According to the history of Banff William was famously murdered by militia outside his home in Low Street, Banff. "murdered in front of the Black Bull Inn"
