John Boswell of Knockroon, Collector of Taxes in Ayr, succeeded his mother (Margaret (Ferguson) Boswell). He sold the property (Knockroon), on the failure of the bank of Douglas, Heron, & Co, to James Boswell of Auchinleck.
ohn Boswell had once owned the lands of Knockroon in the parish of Auchinleck which were later acquired by Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck, a kinsman .
John Boswell established himself as a Writer in Ayr and his signature appears throughout the land tax rolls for Ayrshire of 1759 and 1803 in the role of clerk to the Commissioners of Supply for Ayrshire.

4. | John Boswell was born about 1700 in Craigston, Ayrshire, Scotland (son of David (of Craigston) Boswell); and died. Notes:
John, the second son of David Boswell, junior, married Margaret Ferguson, the heiress of Knockroon, his cousin. This marriage reunited the family estate of Knockroon to the Boswells which descended to John Ferguson, Margaret's father, who had married Elizabeth Boswell, then heiress of Knockroon. John Ferguson was the son of Alexander who sold Killerran to his cousin, the ?rst baronet.

"William Boswell, Esq. of Knockroon, m. Margaret, dau. of Montgomerie, of Brigend, by whom he had issue, William, his heir. Elizabeth, who s. her brother. Agnes. The only son, William Boswell, of Knockroon, who d. s. p., was s. by his sister, Elizabeth Boswell, m. John Fergusson, Esq., by whom she had one child, Margaret Fergusson, m. John Boswell, second son of David Boswell, of Craigstoun, and had, with five daus. one son
