  1. 4.  Richard Dawson was born on 7 Jan 1826 in Mount Pleasant nr. Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland (son of Richard Dawson and Martha Morgan); died on 12 Jan 1909 in Montreal, QC, Canada.

    Notes:

The following obituary for Richard Dawson (7), probably published on January 12, 1909, in The Montreal Gazette, is believed to have been written by his son, A.O. Dawson:
The funeral for the late Mr. Richard Dawson was held to-day (sic) from St. James Methodist Church. The service was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Young, pastor of the Church, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Graham, educational secretary of the Methodist Church, and former pastor, and the Rev. T.A. Halpenny, pastor of the Sherbrooke Street Methodist Church, also a former pastor. Mr. Dawson was born on January 7, 1826, in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. He came to this country with his parents at the age of six months. They settled near Bathurst on the Bay of Chaleur, naming the place in which they settled after their home town, New Bandon. In his young manhood he served as book-keeper (sic) in a large general store in Bathurst, later returning to manage his father's farm. Valuable grindstone being discovered near the homestead, he organized a company for its development, and carried on this industry for many years. To carry the products of the quarry to the markets in the United States, he built a vessel from native timber, but, unfortunately, this vessel was lost in a terrific gale, after having made but very few trips. In addition to supervising his farm and quarries, he acted as the chief magistrate of the district, and earned an envied reputation for his just judgement. He was also a leading spirit in the church of his choice, and for many years his home was the social and religious centre of the community, and headquarters of the clergy of all denominations. The severity of the north shore climate, together with advancing years, induced him to sell the farm and move to Campbellton, N.B., and later to Florida. Here he started an orange grove, which he ran for several years. In 1885 he returned to the homeland, and settled in Montreal, where he has since resided. His earnest and devoted Christian life will long continue to exert a helpful influence upon those who knew him. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. (Rev.) S.B. Gregg, North Chatham, N.Y.; Mrs. W.C. Breedlove, Montreal; Mrs. Jennie D. Balcom, Montreal; and three sons, Dr. W.J.G. Dawson, Eldridge, Cal.; the Rev. G.F. Dawson, Chatham, N.B.; and A.O. Dawson, of the D. Morrice Company Ltd., Montreal. His nephew, Mr. D.C. Dawson, of the Western Union Telegraph Co., St. John, N.B., attended the funeral, together with a large number of personal Montreal friends.

1829??? Richard Dawson, Moneen. Father held land at Moneen for 25 yrs, had a large family and emigrated to America to provide for part of them. At the time of emigration, the farm was in ? arrears, he left it to Richard and John Dawson ? the latter cleared up his part of tall demands. Richard has paid ?31.9.6 since his father left and John has paid ?51. Richard is now in arrears, having lost his crop last year and had a horse stolen. Has always been an improving tenant. Is asking for time to pay and not to be dispossessed. (http://www.bandon-genealogy.com/bandon_devonshire_estate_tenants_letters.htm)

28th Apr 1826 -Had toured the area and found that 'the poverty and ?? is truly appalling'.
    ?4th May 1826 - 557 families ? 2462 individuals in want and unemployed
402 families ? 1862 individuals may be relieved by affording them work of any kind which they are willing to accept
The remainder 155 families ? 600 individuals are totally destitute and incapacitated by sickness, bodily infirmity and age.
?470 has been collected for relief.
Work to be offered to those of the 1st class? At 6d or 8d per day and provide meal to be distributed twice a week to those incapable of work at the rate of 1 quart at each delivery for each adult and 1 pint for each child.
He expects to be able to manage for some time but will require the fund to continue.
?15th Apr 1826 - Met with Mr Newman, he 'gave me a very melancholy description of the destitute state in which many of these poor people are, weavers as well as others, the principal causes to the constant sickness which prevailed amongst that class, the entire of the late winter.'
He (Popham) agrees that all requiring it should be relieved as Paupers and not as belonging to any class of tradesmen Weavers or others but as Paupers alone ?it is a very nice and dangerous thing to interfere with the manufacturers and their workmen, in fact that noe of us are aware of the dangerous tendency, the supporting by subscription persons in combination and those very present bringing distress to their own doors by their own misconduct? ?the more private the thing is done, the more beneficial?

    Notes:

James and Mary moved to Qu?bec in 1837. They settled at Little River, Qu?bec, on a farm that was just visible north of Qu?bec City. They lived there for the rest of their lives. James was a "Scotch-English-Irishman" and a staunch Presbyterian. ("Memories of My Early Life" by Mary Gillespie Henderson)

    Information below is from http://www.gillespieancestors.com/

James Gillespie, born in Scarnageeragh, County Monaghan, Ireland, April 20, 1810, was the son of John Gillespie and Sarah Woods Gillespie, his second wife. John Gillespie, a farmer and a weaver, whose father came from Glasgow, Scotland, was well-known in the county and was instrumental in raising a company of volunteers for Lord Charlemont in the Rebellion of 1798. Born in 1780, John Gillespie lived to the great age of 100.

By his first marriage, John Gillespie had two daughters and a son. The two daughters married brothers of the name Greer and immigrated to the United States; the son remained in Ireland. By his second marriage, he had 3 sons - Robert, James and Alexander, and one daughter, Sarah, who married John Smith. All of these immigrated to Canada, but Alexander contracted typhoid on the ship and died in the hospital in Quebec.

James Gillespie, who was employed on the estate of Lord Beresford, "Primate of all Ireland," was married in Lisnadill Church on December 31, 1835, to Mary Jamieson (b. 3-3-1814), one of
four daughters of Arthur Jamieson and Mary Orr, who had a farm about five miles from Armagh. She had a good voice and sang in the choir of Lisnadill Church, her father being precentor.

James Gillespie and his young wife came to Quebec in 1837. For a time he managed the farm of George Henderson at Little River, four miles from the city. This farm later became the Hossack farm. He soon rented the place, and lived there for about eight years. Here, four children were born - Eliza Jane, Mary, John and Sarah. In 1845, he rented the Hamilton farm, directly north of Scott's Bridge, and in this home were born James, George Arthur Stewart and Margaret. It was here that Eliza Jane was married, in the year 1857, to Alexander Buchanan.

In 1860, James Gillespie bought a farm nearby from Mr. Prendergast, which the family still owned, according to family records, as late as 1965. Mary was married to Peter LeRossignol there in 1862; Sarah to Alexander Gillespie (her cousin) in 1867, and Margaret to James Jack in 1876. The house was an old-fashioned, French-Canadian type, with a steep roof and sloping eaves. Fronted by the St. Charles River, the house had farmland extending almost two miles back towards Charlesbourg.

Two photos exist of Gillespie family homes in Little River. There is a discrepancy in records as
to whether the house at left is actually the Hossack house or the Prendergast house. Click on photo to see a similar house captioned by Mary Gillespie LeRossignol-Henderson, in her book, "Memories of My Early Life," as being her "birth-place." However, Mary Henderson's written description of the Prendergast house matches the architecture of the houses in both photos. When James Gillespie arrived in Quebec in 1837, he became affiliated with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, where he was an active member and an elder for 35 years, during the long ministry of Dr. John Cook. He organized the first Sunday school in Quebec, and for a time, served as its superintendent at the Cameron Church in St. Roch. Greatly interested in education, he secured the services of a teacher from Ireland, Mrs. Story, and gave her the use of a cottage on the farm, in which she lived and where school was held. The dairy business that they ran on the farm supplied the Officers' Mess in Quebec with butter, all made into quarter pound prints with a thistle stamp.

After their children were married, with the exception of Agnes and Margaret, James and Mary Gillespie stayed on the farm for several years, until it was bought by their son, James Gillespie II. They rented an adjacent farm, where they lived until Mary Orr Jamieson Gillespie died on 2-25-1880. About 2 years after this, James Gillespie married a cousin, Mrs. McRoberts, n?e Woods, at Lucan, Ontario, and lived there for several years - and later at Park Hill. When his wife became too frail to keep house, she made her home with a daughter and James Gillespie lived with the Rev. and Mrs. James Henderson until his death on 10-8-1899. His body was taken to Quebec and buried in the family lot in Mount Hermon Cemetery.

James married Mary Orr Jamieson on 31 Dec 1835 in Lisnadill Church, Armagh. Mary (daughter of Arthur Jamieson and Mary Orr) was born on 3 Mar 1814; died on 25 Feb 1880. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 15.  Mary Orr Jamieson was born on 3 Mar 1814 (daughter of Arthur Jamieson and Mary Orr); died on 25 Feb 1880.

    Notes:

Her brothers John and William James Jamieson came to Quebec. John worked for James Gillespie for a time and then went to West Winchester where he bought a farm. She was a very busy woman with a large family and a large dairy to look after. She had a good deal of musical ability which was inherited by some of her children and grandchildren. She was a pretty woman in her youth with good features and beautiful fair hair with a reddish tinge. But an attack of malaria caused it to darken and grow thin and when not more than fifty-five she began to wear a cap of white muslin at home and black lace with mauve ribbon bows when she went out for tea.
