"TIP #660 ? PETITIONS OF THE EARLY INHABITANTS OF KENTUCKY, PART 1
In the summer of 1910 a wonderful find was made. James Rood Robertsonfrom Berea College was visiting in Richmond, VA. And, there, hidden inthe archives were found 110 petitions from the early inhabitants ofKentucky to Virginia. These were not of course all the petitions butare believed to be fairly complete. A vast amount of these opens upthe door to the names of Kentucky?s earliest residents. Many of theold petitions were torn, dirty, faded and the handwriting not theeasiest to read. But to actually read what our pioneers wereaddressing before statehood is priceless. The oldest petition foundwas dated in 1769 and the last in 1831 ? years after Kentucky reachedstatehood. During this early date, Kentucky was merely a VirginiaCounty which had been passed between various counties there over theyears."

Migration Pattern of the Martin Family:
After 1778 left Virginia for Kentucky.
After 1822 left Kentucky for Ohio.
After 1843 left Ohio for Indiana.
After 1864 left Indiana for Illinois.

Probable Scenerio For The Family: So, James Martin was born in c.1778 A.D. Virginia. John Martin is his possible brother. JamesMartin married Nancy Fight in Nicholas County, Kentucky c. 1809 A.D.Their son William was born in 1822 in Kentucky, no doubt in NicholasCounty, Kentucky. John Martin also married Sarah Fight, Nancy'ssister in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Plus, Nancy and Sarah's fatherGilbert Fight was living in Nicholas County, Kentucky at the time aswell. Probably around 1840 the family was in Ohio, because Lorenzowas born there, and Jacob Fight (Nancy's brother) is also in Ohio atthis time. Lorenzo was 6 years old in the Indiana census in 1850,and had been born in Ohio. James and Nancy were too old as a coupleto have had a child, so Lorenzo had to be a grandson possibly or avery near relative. Lorenzo's parents were also born in Ohio. So, hewas not William's son. Jacob Fight stays in Ohio. They are all stilltogether in the 1850 & 1860 census in Otter Creek, Ripley, Indiana.William marries in 1851 to Caroline Beckelhymer in Ripley County,Indiana. The Beckelhymer Family migrated to Indiana around 1837from Ohio. Part of Caroline Beckelhymer's family also moved toRichland County, Illinois (See Nathaniel Sr. Beckelhymer's notes). In the 1850 census records it is indicated that William owns the landthey are farming in Ripley County, Indiana. Lorenzo (17-18 yearsold) has joined the Union Army during the Civil War probably in1861-2, and mustered out in 1864. Also, William has joined the sameUnion Army regiment as Lorenzo, but is in a different company. In1864 after his service in the war, William has moved his family toNoble, Richland County, Illinois. I believe that James and Nancywere both dead by this time, because I cannot find them in the censusrecords any more, plus no cemetery records can be found for them. They may have been buried on the farm. I believe that William eithersold the farm to Lorenzo or signed it over to him, because Lorenzoremains in Otter Creek, Ripley County, Indiana as per the 1880 censusin Indiana for Ripley County, Indiana, and has a family of his own. When William moved his family to Illinois, he bought another farm thatwas located in Noble, Richland County, Illinois. By the 1880 censusin Nobles, William Martin is now the manager of the post office, ownsa farm, and his oldest son James H. Martin is a lawyer (27 yrs. old),and his next son John Martin (24 yrs. old) manages the farm since heis listed as the farmer. All of the children are single and living athome still. This is a very close knit family.

Noted: James was 81 years old in the 1860 Federal Census still livingwith his son William in Otter Creek, Ripley County, Indiana. He wasnot with the family in the 1880 Census in Noble, Richland County,Illinois nor was he found in the 1880 census records for Indiana. Heprobably died in Indiana shortly after the 1860 census.

Please Note That Kentucky Had Few Records Available In The EarlyPortion Of Its History: Kentucky did not keep comprehensive, officialbirth and death records until 1911, but did maintain lists of births, deaths, and marriages, filed by county, from 1852-1862, 1874-1879,1891-1910 in the State Auditor's Office, which are available at KDLA.Kentucky passed a comprehensive vital statistics law in 1911 to issueofficial certificates of birth and death. The birth records after 1911are available from the KY Office of Vital Statistics. Deathcertificates from 1911-1954 are available at KDLA. Death certificatesissued after 1954 are available from the KY Office of VitalStatistics.
Marriage records are created by County Clerks in Kentucky's 120counties. Many of these marriage records are available at KDLA, or atthe offices of individual county clerks. The State Auditor alsomaintained lists of marriages, filed by county, from 1852-1910, andthe KY Office of Vital Statistics began recording marriages in 1958.http://kdla.ky.gov/research.htm
