11. | Marjory Sutherland was born about 1436 (daughter of Alexander (of Dunbeath) Sutherland and Katherine Chalmers, daughter of Alexander (of Dunbeath) Sutherland and Marion (Or Mariotta) (De Ile) Macdonald); and died. Notes:
Doug Hickling writes:
"I found an article by Andrew B. W. MacEwen entitled "Marjory
Sutherland, Countess of Caithness and Orkney," appearing in the Spring1999
issue of THE GENEALOGIST, beginning at page 84. In very convincing style,
MacEwen goes through a considerable amount of documentary evidence toprove that Marjory Sutherland, the daughter of Alexander (of Dunbeath)Sutherland, and who married William (3rd Earl of Orkney & Caithness)Sinclair, was not the daughter of Marion or Mariota MacDonald or Ile, butrather one of many children whom Alexander had by his lifelong liaison, beginning in the early 1420s, with Catherine Chalmers. You show her asKatherine Chalmers in your gedcom. The article points out that AlexanderSutherland of Dunbeath and
Marion had only one child together, named Marion apparently after hermother.
In fact, Marion was the only legitimate child of Alexander and Marion
MacDonald (Ile). The daughter Marion married William, Thane of Cawdor."
