David Dale makes the case that Erc was female not male. In addition hesays:

"Chapter 11 : The Senchus Fer n' Alban
The Senchus Fer n' Alban is probably the oldest document available to us,and since it begins with the line of Erc, most historians date the adventof Scottish settlement with the Mac Erc dynasty. However the Senchus doesnot claim to be a comprehensive history, instead it states quite clearlythat;
"here begins the abbreviated history of the men of Scotland"
Thus quite clearly we can identify that much information is missing fromit : as an abbreviated history there would be very little point indiscussing overthrown dynasties, land changes, settlement patterns or soon. All we can say for certain is that the Mac Erc dynasty was the royallineage of the Scots in the 7th century and their story is as follows;
"Two sons of Eochaid Muin-remor, namely Erc and Olchu. And Erc had twelvesons, six of them took possession of Scotland :- two Loarns, Loarn Becand Loarn Mor; and two sons of {Nes}, Mac Misi Bec and Mac Misi Mor; twosons Fergus Bec and Fergus Mor. Six others were in Ireland, namelyMac-Deichill; Angus, whose descendants are in Scotland; Enda, Bressal,Fiachra, Dubtach, Others say that Erc had another son whose name wasMuiredach."

David Dale has done vast amount of research and has produced an excellent
report, which I would highly recommend to anyone interested.

He also says in chapter "12.3 Erc, Loarn and Eochaid Muin-Remor":
"...modern historians (it is after all a 10th Century copy of an ancienttract) which must have been subjected to wear over so many years, made amistake interpreting Mac (son of) instead of Nic (daughter of). Erccould, in fact, realistically be the mother of at least 12 sons, possiblyeven more children, by different fathers as both men and women practisedPolygamy in the pagan world of the Celt - no-one has, as yet, proved thatErc was Christian (No doubt some Celtic monk would have "cleaned up" thetale of how Erc had her children by the various fathers). It is possiblethat Sallen could have fathered children of Erc before her so-called"elopement" with Prince Muiredach - which would have meant that theChristian annalists could have had to substitute a supposed "sister"Pompa into the tales, in order to cleanse the image of the ancestor of somany Irish saints."
