    Notes:

mmigrated to America in 1841 on the Ship SHEFFIELD with 234 other Mormon Immigrants.

George had 3 wives. He had 35 children before the government decided to wipe out polygamy. He provided separate homes for each of his families. He fed and clothed and educated these children. 23 of these children lived to get married. When the government intervenes, George had the opportunity to choose one wife to marry 'legally," and forsake the other 2. He refused to do so, and was then sent to the Utah Penitentiary. He served his full term minus 3 months for good behavior.

George married Vilate Ellen Douglas on 26 Feb 1857 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Vilate (daughter of George Douglas and Ellen Briggs) was born in 1840; died on 9 Dec 1917 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA; was buried on 12 Dec 1917 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA. Notes:

??Born about 1832 in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire, England

She sailed to America with her family, when she was just 15 months old.
She married George when she was 16, in the Endowment House on Temple Block. Feb. 26, 1856.

Vilate Douglas Romney, had a very large family with George. They had 6 sons and 6 daughters. In her daughter Ellens' words describing her mother: "She knew practically everyone living in the 20th ward. This ward extended from Eagle Gate to the City Cemetery, from South Temple to Ensign Peak. She was the Good Samaritan in sickness and death. Was willing and ready for any call where she could serve. She helped lay out the dead, make burial clothes, etc. A ministering angel to her own large family. She was treasurer for 20 yrs in the 20th ward Relief Society-which didnt mean that she took care of money but she gave value to merchandise sent in where money was not to be had. As you can imagine, the distribution of this 'merchandise' was where the real labor was required. Time and judgement were required as this was delivered to the poor. After years of devotion and service to her family, fortune smiled on her and she had the luxuries of life. She traveled considerable, crossing the continent several times. Visiting in California and in the north west. Spent 3 months in Europe and the British Isles. She visited Old Mexico and many places of less importance."

Miles Romney, the son of noted artist George Romney, created the plans for the St. George Tabernacle, a historic building in St. George, Utah. It opened in 1876 to serve as a public works building, originally hosting church services and court hearings. Today, it is open to the public and hosts many public events, such as concerts.. The main clock and bell tower stands 140 feet (43 m) tall. Basement walls were 3 feet (0.91 m) thick and the above-ground walls are 2.5 feet (0.76 m) thick. The red sandstone bricks used to construct the building were intended to match the surrounding red cliffs. Inside, ceilings rise 29 feet (8.8 m) high with a plaster cornice, supported by twenty columns.

A gallery was built ten feet off the ground on the north, south, and east walls, with two circular staircases serving the east end. An organ was added in 1878. All materials were local, except for windows, shipped from Wilmington, California. When completed, the church could seat 1,200 people. The clock tower was originally used by the city residents to tell time.
The tabernacle still stands and earned the nickname "Jewel of the Desert". It underwent restoration in 1993 to help it resemble its original state.

The tabernacle was intended to work as a church and a courthouse. Funds for the building were raised by diverting all tithes from Beaver and all communities southward. Construction began on June 1, 1863. The building was opened on May 14, 1876, with a dedication ceremony featuring Brigham Young, Jr.
