Tipping of Manchester
Tipping are very old family seated in Lancashire namely at Clayton le Dale about 5 miles from Blackburn where they occupied Tipping Hall. They were doing all the usual things as befitting their status, occupying positions in society , being school governors and aiding the poor etc . They are recorded in the reign of Edward 111 but they most likely have a history long before then .The family split in early 16th c one part ending up in Oxford and who bagged the title and the others seemed to gravitate to Preston and then on to Manchester where their descendants married into all the big Manchester families of Mosley, Diggles, Bancroft etc .
There are numerous pedigrees given for them none of which have not been gone through with any great attention by the writer. Tipping were again working in the cloth trade and were a family with money and clout and high up in the pecking order of Manchester They can be found on many occasions in the Manchester Court Leet records. Of course the same first names occur all down the generations making it rather hard to select the correct ancestors. Commentators seem to be confused as to whom the daughter Robert Gartside married and some have her down as the possible wife of John Tipping with a son Thomas but a little more digging indicates that she married Joseph Tipping.
John Tipping may have caused the confusion by marrying an Elizabeth [Betty] Gartside daughter of James Gartside Gent of Manchester John married Betty in the Cathedral 8th May 1746 and she was buried there March 1755 and what looks like her child also a Betty follows not long after so again died in or shortly after childbirth It is not known if there is any relationship between James Gartside and Robert. It appears a James Gartside married in the Cathedral Manchester in 1709 a woman with the surname Lees but whose first name is very unhelpfully absent in the reference the writer is searching for. So is the pattern developing of marriages into the same families a not an unusual occurrence. ?.John Tipping and Betty had children including a Martha who on 19th Feb 1777 married at the Cathedral into the influential family of Clowes by marrying Samuel. Docs describe Martha's granddad as James Gartside of Manchester Gent and having property in Manchester called the Mount which seems to consist of dwellings and some land James is mentioned in the Court Leet records when he is having a bit of set to with his neighbour over a dividing fence and the Mount is named in that account as well as Gartside land Of course Robert could now be a son of James Gartside and mystery lady Lees .James Gartside Gent died in 1764 and he is mentioned in the docs in the writers possession to do with John Gartsides debts and where Robert his father is mentioned in conjunction with a James Gartside described as a tanner This doc is to do with fields and rents but no relationship is given. James is renting from Robert a part of the little meadow. . James does not appear to be buried in Manchester Cathedral but he died leaving a will probated in 1766. He appears to have married again to Hannah Bower a Salford widow with a settlement drawn up in 1762 The Mount was conveyed to John Garside of Charles worth of Co Derby in 1730 by other well known Manchester men. These docs are in the Clowes deeds
Joseph Tipping was the son of Thomas Tipping of Cheetham and was bap Manchester Cathedral 29th June 1743 and was the heir of his father Thomas ,father of Joseph was born in 1716 in Manchester, and Esther Bancroft his wife born in 1714 , daughter of Joseph Bancroft .
Thomas married twice but there was no issue from the second marriage to Katherine Mundy of Eaton. Joseph's grandparents were Thomas and Martha Tipping nee Taylor and so his tree keeps going in this fashion until c 1475. There is a memorial in Manchester Cathedral to this particular part of Tipping family
Joseph Tipping has siblings but it needs to be kept uncomplicated so for the sake of a quick mention these are Thomas of Ardwick who married Ann Whitacre and had 5 children, Mary who married William Turner, Samuel who died in 1823, a general in the army just by way change from being in the cotton trade, and Martha who died in 1774..
Joseph married Ann Gartside daughter of Robert but some accounts state he was of Little Bolton making no mention of the other places Prestwich etc Joseph and Ann married in Manchester Cathedral 4th Feb 1768. Ann is said to have died aged 42 and she was indeed buried at Manchester Cathedral in Aug 1788. Joseph lasted out until he died in 1800 being buried in Manchester Cathedral on 10th Jan 1800
Joseph and Ann had children possibly as many as eight at his death it is recorded that Joseph was survived by three daughters and a son
Ann being the eldest was baptised in Manchester Cathedral 24th Feb 1776 she married John Douglas at one time of Pendleton Old Hall Salford and later of Flintshire . It appears that for some unknown reason Ann and John were married at Ashton on Mersey in March 1805 and a notice of their nuptials is given in various magazines of the day There is at least one child of the marriage Mary who married John Hardman giving rise to at least one child Joseph Tipping Hardman His only son was Lord of the Manor of Bolton and resided at Davenport in Cheshire and the family in whose possession the picture of Thos Moss the Jacobite should be .
Mary Ann another surviving daughter was baptised Manchester Cathedral Cathedral 17th April 1781 and was married in 1802 in Edgbaston to Edward Withnall and their union produced a whole football team.
The other surviving daughter to be mentioned is Alice also baptised Manchester Cathedral 22nd April 1783 and it is unknown who she married if anyone
Other children however seem emerge who are down to Ann and Joseph namely Joseph, John, Thomas Harriet Esther and Jane.
Harriet Esther was baptised Cathedral 24 Th Feb 1778 and buried there 26th May 1779
John was baptised Manchester Cathedral 5th Jan 1769 and was educated at Manchester Grammar and frequented school reunions in 1788, 90 and 93 he did a recitation at speech day in 1785. John married Lydia daughter of Mathew Dymoke Lister of Burwell Park Lincolnshire There was no issue and he died at Claxby Lincolnshire 3rd July 1797 aged 28 during the lifetime of his father.
Thomas was baptised in Manchester Cathedral 25th April 1774 and he was of Fulshaw Hall ,Fulshaw being near Wilmslow Thomas is described as heir of Joseph This indicates that his brother Joseph baptised in the Cathedral Manchester 18th Nov 1770 must also have died and he is indeed buried in the Cathedral 3rd Dec 1770. Thomas was married to? and his eldest daughter Anna was married in Prestbury Cheshire in 1810 to Robert Hibbert of Birtles
Jane Moss Tipping died 31stJuly 1788 aged 16
Joseph resided at Ardwick and later at Crumpsall. He was connected to Chethams Hospital Manchester and was of course trustee of his brother in law John Gartside together with Charles Ford, whom he outlived .Joseph and Charles were also together Trustees of the grammar school in Blackburn and Joseph was involved in trusteeships of various charities .

Joseph married Ann Gartside on 4 Feb 1768. Ann (daughter of Robert Gartside) was born about 1746; died in Aug 1788. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
