  1. 2.  Roddam Hulke Douglas was born on 19th Jul 1817 in Fareham, Hampshire, England (son of Rear Admiral Peter John Douglas, R.N. and Lydia Moriarty); died on 2nd Jul 1902 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.

    Notes:

    Educated at the English College, Caen, France, migrated to Van Diemen's Land, aboard the barque "Persian", arrived 1832, pioneer in Dunorlan district, near Deloraine, later agriculture, grain-buying, carrying and coaching in Westbury district.
    Mr. RODDAM HULKE DOUGLAS, Justice of the Peace, Launceston, was born at Fareham, near Portsmouth, in the year 1817, and is the second son of the late Admiral Peter John Douglas, and grandson of Admiral Billy Douglas, and was educated in France. He arrive in Tasmania in 1832, and gained colonial experience under his uncle, the late Captain Moriarty, who owned a large estate at Dunorlan. Mr. Douglas was for a great number of years prominently connected with the Westbury district, both in a business and public way; was a member of the Westbury Council for a very long time; and also held the position of warden. On the occasion of his departure from the district for a trip to Europe in the fifties, he was the recipient of a very valuable piece of plate. He was a resident for fourteen years in the Evandale district, where he held numerous public positions. For over forty years Mr. Douglas has been a staunch supporter of the Wesleyan Church.

    Roddam married Mary Selina Langslow on 3 Dec 1839 in Hatton, Middlesex, Rngland. Mary (daughter of Capt. Richard Langslow and Lydia Coles) was born in 1822; was christened on 5 Oct 1822 in Kew, Surrey, England; died on 22 Sep 1895 in 218 Charles Street, Launceston, Australia; was buried in Westbury Church of England burial ground..     Mrs Mary Selina Douglas, born in 1822, a daughter of Captain Richard Langslow. Mary married Roddam Hulke Douglas on 3 Dec 1839 at Hatton, Middlesex, England. The couple sailed to Van Diemen's Land in 1840 and lived in the Westbury district. They had 13 children between Nov 1840 and Feb 1864. The seven youngest were christened at the Methodist Church at Westbury. They later lived in the Evandale district before moving to Launceston. Mary died on 22 Sep 1895 at 218 Charles Street, Launceston, and was interred in the Westbury Church of England burial ground.

    A great grandson, Colin Langslow Douglas (qv), Son of Onslow Gordon Douglas and Kate Douglas, of Launceston, Tasmania, was killed at Gallipoli in 1915.

    Peter married Lydia Moriarty about 1813. Lydia (daughter of Vice-Admiral Sylverius Moriarty, RN and Lydia Hinton) was born in 1794; died on 2nd Aug 1855. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Admiral of the Blue Squadron, R.N., Port Admiral at Yarmouth and subsequently Chatham, Kent. He commanded the Stately 64, in expeditions against the Cape of Good Hope 1795 and 1796.

    One of his daughters married Capt Mathew Barton Bradby, (son of Rear Admiral Bradby, d1809) who died when the ship he was on was struck by lightening off Spithead, 5th May 1831.

    He joined the Royal Navy in 1756 when the vessel in which he was taking passage from France to Ireland was taken by a British Frigate[2].and was commissioned lieutenant at the age of 41 on 6 July

    During the French Revolutionary War he served for a long period as the regulating captain at Cork, and in due course he was promoted rear-admiral on 1 January 1801 and vice-admiral on 9 November 1805.
