• Notes

The Clephane sisters were wards of writer Walter Scott - Why? After her husnad's death and birth of her son, she soon returned to Germany for her son's education and became lady-in-waiting to the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, born Princess of Hesse. In 1862, after the terrible death of her son in China, she founded the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Wilhelm von Normann Foundation for his eternal memory.
