They acquired much of their county Cork estate through purchases from the trustees for the sale of forfeited estates, including parts of the former estates of Justin McCarthy in the barony of Muskerry and of Sir Richard Nagle in the barony of Fermoy. Edward Riggs of the Middle Temple, London, married Margaret Pigott and had an only daughter Anne who in 1765 married John Miller of Ballycaseymore, county Clare. Anne Miller was sole heiress to her grandfather the Right Honourable Edward Riggs of Rigsdale and Binfield in Berkshire, England, Commissioner of his Majesty's Revenues. Major Edward Riggs who settled in Cork in 1651 as Commissioner of the Peace and Member of Parliament for Bandon (MP 1st August 1695 - 2nd September 1603). Riggs was a fervent Baptist and as there was no local Baptist church he commenced Sunday worship meetings on his Riggsdale estate. He was also a cromwellian soldier. Riggs was declared a freeman of Cork city at the age of seventy-four. He died in his ninetieth year in 1707. These Baptist services became well attended with Riggs concerned for the preaching of the Gospel and the protection of those who converted from Roman Catholicism to biblical Christianity and a baptistic ecclesiolog Riggs' third wife, Ann, whom he married in 1677, was forty years younger than him. She bore seven children. She was faithful to the Baptist cause in Cork throughout her life. When her husband died in 1707, he be- queathed Ann an income of twelve-hundred pounds per annum together with the two townlands she owned in Co. Tipperary.10 This enabled her to fund the building of a Baptist Meeting house on Mill Street (now Liberty Street), a manse and fifty pounds per annum stipend for a pastor "for-ever." Ann died in 1740 and was buried with her husband Edward in the family vault situated in the Ballinhassig Church of Ireland which is now derelict Thomas Riggs of Riggsland, fl1725 was later of Morton, Scotland.
