Notes |
- Archibald Douglas Monteath ("the Major"), who resided at 146 West George Street, Glasgow, was the recognized arbiter of beauty in Glasgow. The house was pulled down to build the new Club. Major Monteath had made a fortune in India (rumour said, by looting a treasure elephant), and on his death in 1842 James Monteath succeeded to his fortune.
