• Notes

  Left Scotland with parents and three brothers in (1848 or) 1851 to join brother John who immigrated to Canada in 1842 settling in Northumberland County, near Warkworth, Ontario. Later moved to Iowa with John Stuart and started an oat milling company that his sons grew into Quaker Oats. In his youth George served with Scotland Yard in London with distinction. A stone mason and railroad builder, he designed and build the railroad from Cedar Rapids to Marion in 1862-1863 and moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa from Canada in 1873. George and Robert Stuart (sometimes referred to as a cousin but is likely not related) form North Star Oatmeal Mills to mill oats for export to Scotland. Their sons later merged the company with two other companies to form Quaker Oats. George was also involved in manufacturing shoes, Gates, Clifford and Douglas, and a cracker factorywhich was managed by his nephew James Douglas until its sale to National Biscuit Company.
