  well-known orator and controversialist heir of line of James Crichton of Frandraught, assumed the names of Makgill and Crichton: from descend the present families of Maitland-Makgill Crichton and Makgill-Chrichton-Maitland. (Research):I think this man: He was born at Rankeillour, and educated at Madras College, St Andrews. He then went into the army, but lost the sight of one eye at Gibraltar and was forced to retire. He then worked as an agent for the City of Glasgow Bank at Milnathort, and also farmed there. He was also a stockbroker, and a wine merchant in Leith. He married Anna Stirling of St Andrews. He later inherited the moveable estate of his cousin William Johnston of Lathrisk, a sum of nearly a million pounds; in 1890 he bought the estate of Balmungo near St Andrews and settled down to farm the 120 acres there. He wrote a book of reminiscences of his childhood home, called 'My early Scottish Home'. He had no children and left his estate to various charities, to the Free Church, and to relatives of the Maitland, Makgill Crichton, Bayne Meldrum, Neish and Barns-Graham families.
