• Notes

He gained the rank of Lieutenant of the 16th/5th Lancers & was promoted to Major in the service of the 155th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. He fought in the Second World War, where he was captured as a Prisoner of War in the Far East. He succeeded to the title of 10th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell [S., 1662] de jure, & 10th Lord Johnstone [S., 1662] de jure., on 26 October 1964, He held the office of Hereditary Steward of Annandale and Hereditary Keeper of Lochmaben Palace on 26 October 1964. In 1982 he claimed the 1662 creations of the Annandale titles, which was considered in a much more favourable light than the 1661 creations (hitherto the subject of the various claims over the previous 150 years). However he died before further progress was made. [http://thepeerage.com/p4337.htm#i43364]
