The Count of Flanders was then, de facto, probably the most powerful sovereign in northwest Europe. Bruges was strategically of huge importance. It would be a very attractive offer, especially to a landless younger son, and it could be expected to lead on to further opportunities (such as the offer to accompany the Count's daughter toNormandy, when she left to marry Duke William, the eventual Conqueror of England, an offer that would entail a grant of land in the Cotentin" From Baronage at http://www.baronage.co.uk/bphtm-03/bruce-05.html See also Bruce at at Stirnet Genealogy, Families Database at http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/genfam.htm 'Bruce1' http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/british/bb4fz/bruce1.htm Families covered: Bruce of Annandale, Bruce of Carrick, Bruce ofScotland, Bruce of Skelton 'Bruce2' http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/british/bb4fz/bruce2.htm Families covered: Bruce of Airth, Bruce of Clackmannan, Bruce ofEarlshall, Bruce of Green, Bruce of Kennet, Bruce of Stenhouse, Bruce of Wester Kennet Main sources: (1) Bruces of Clackmannan - TSP (Elgin & Ailesbury).
