- An undated newspaper clipping provides us with an Obituary of Edgar Hassler:
"Edgar S. (Ted) Hassler, 75, of Leesburg, Mercer RD 6, former publisher of the Allied Newspapers and a community leader, was dead on arrival at 1:30 a.m. today in Grove City Hospital following a heart attack.
"Mr. Hassler was born in Meyersdale, Pa., Nov. 29, 1893, to the late Edgar Schaff and Rilla Jane Prugh Hassler. He was the husband of the former Sylvia Boots, whom he married Sept. 19, 1922.
"He had retired in 1965 as publisher of the Allied Newspapers chain in Grove City that included the Reporter Herald, the Mercer Dispatch, the Slippery Rock Signal and the Lakeview Breeze which he had published since 1922. He received a bachelors degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1921 and a masters degree from Grove City College in 1926. From 1940 to 1957 he served as an assistant professor of journalism at Grove City College.
"Mr. Hassler was a printer with the Pittsburgh Dispatch from 1920 to 1921. He also was president of the Blacktown Telephone Co. from 1953 until his death. He served as a director of the Grove City Industrial Development Corp. and was president of Grove City Area Joint School Board with a total of 25 years service on the board. He was a former member of Grove City Chamber of Commerce, served on the Federal Rationing Board in Mercer during World War II and currently was chairman of the Mercer County Board of Assistance.
"He was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Grove City and had served as a church trustee for over 15 years, a member of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association and was honored in the late 1940's as Pennsylvania Publisher of the Year.
"He was a justice of the peace in Springfield Township from 1944 to 1956 then was returned to office in 1966 serving until his death. He was a member of Grove City Lodge 603, F and A M, and had been presented with his 50-year pin, the Grove City Rotary Club, Springfield Township Sportsmen's Club, was listed in Marquis' Who's Who in the East and was a veteran of World War I with the U.S. Army in France from 1917 to 1919.
"Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Pamela Sylvia at home and Mrs. Patrick (Prugh) Barger of Leesburg; two sisters, Mrs. Miriam Wyrick and Helen Hassler, both of Akron; five brothers, Jacob P. and Paul C., both of Grove City, Mark of Shelby, Ohio; Donald M. of Akron, David C. in Hawaii; and two grandchildren.
"Friends will be received at the Grace Cunningham Smith Funeral Home in Leesburg from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
"A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home by Dr. H. Clair Heitzenrater of Grace Methodist Church of Grove City.
"Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park in Grove City.
"The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a foundation for a scholarship in his name with Dale Pearce, superintendent of Grove City Schools."
