Mary D. Scott
Mary D. Hamilton, Daughter of Jon and Martha Hamilton, was born March14 1841, at Brownstown, Jackson County, Indiana. She was the onlyDaughter in a family of seven and as her parents died when she wasonly four years old she with her brothers came to this community andspent her early life in the home of relatives.
She was married to William H Scott in 1866. To this union were borntwo children, Eddie S. and Nettie. The husband and father died in 1875leaving the care of the home and children to the mother. With thisresponsibility she also found time to be a good kind neighbour and afaithful member of the Christian Church here at Portland Mills, withwhich she had united in early life. She lived for almost 90 years inthis community and helped to make the wonderful change from pioneerconditions to the present time, always showing a cheerful kindlinessto every one she met.
After the death of her son's wife she made her home with him andhelped to care fro his two children. Also later, after the death ofher son she kept house for her grandson, William. As she became lessable to care from herself she came to the home of her daughter, whereshe spent the last years of her life.
Always with a smile and pleasant work for everyone she met. From thishome she went in peace and faith to her other home March 30th, 1934,aged 93years and 16 days.
She leaves her daughter Mrs Nettie McGill eight grandchildren fourgreat grandchildren and very many relatives and friends who miss herlove and kindness.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev Brattain at Portland MillsChristian Church Sunday April 1 with burial service at Mt PisgahCemetery." [Transcribed 26 September 2008, SLJuhl, Compiler]
