Contibuted: On Friday, 9th October the sailing boat Mariecelia left Rance in France to return to Jersey. On board were Mr and Mrs James Mackenzie Fraser, Mr Michael McCowan, Miss Alison Bruce Mitchell and the Fraser's son Robert. As you rightly said it was a week-end of terrible storms and within sight of Jersey the Mariecelia was hit by huge waves, the yacht's superstrucure was swept away and all 5 were thrown into the water.
Apparently they all survived for a while but one by one were swept away. The only survivor was Alison Bruce Mitchell who after 15 hours in the water managed to struggle ashore at a remote bay on the north of the island. She was found by a farmer and his 2 sons (who I was at school with!) and spent about 2 weeks in hospital.
