John Blackwood (2 October 1696 '96 12 November 1777) was a Scottish merchant who early in his life was a slave trader in New Spain, later becoming a noted and sought-after art dealer. He was based in London but travelled widely on the Continent, and was one of the first dealers to introduce the works of Murillo to Britain.
Blackwood set up as a merchant in London engaged in the slave trade under the name of Blackwood Cathcart, Nag's Head Court, Lombard Street. In 1726 he married a wealthy well-connected widow, who brought him considerable property in Kent, where he settled at Charlton near his wife's brother-in-law, the 1st Lord Romney, also becoming the neighbour and friend of the 1st Lord Egmont. Next year he successfully contested Glasgow Burghs, but the Commons awarded the seat to his opponent, Daniel Campbell,
