- He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England. He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and wounded. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Machine Gun Corps. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 4th Battalion, Royal Susse Regiment (Territorial Army). He gained the rank of officer in the service of the Royal Flying Corps. He entered the military between 1926 and 1929 in China, as an officer in the U.S. Army. He succeeded to the title of 10th Baronet Agnew, of Lochnaw, co. Wigtown [N.S., 1629] on 14 July 1928. He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). He was a farmer between 1944 and 1953 at South Africa. He was Registrar of the University of Fort Hare. He was Secretary of Cambridge University, Department of Education between 1960 and 1965.
