Notes |
- From Bryan Cass:
From an article in the Watkins Express, 2 Nov 1988, pg. 15:
"In order to duly celebrate this [wedding] event so important in his life, for the Doctor was a bachelor and along in years, he gave carte blanche to all the hotel and restaurant proprietors and instructions to feed and drink everybody who came to town for seven days. The news flew through the county and brought about everybody in, and all who were so inclined quaffed such deep and repeated potations to the health of the Doctor and his bride that scores slept at night by highway and hedgerow.
No one went hungry or dry that week and the whole village had a hilariously happy time. Dr. Watkins was an Englishman by family if not by birth and such merry making to celebrate a marriage is more common there than here, and was quite the rule in earlier days.
The Doctor, beside his estate in what is now this county, owned much New York city property, including several farms on Manhattan island, one of 96 and one of 100 acres, both of which are now covered with buildings.
Strangely enough Dr. Watkins believed in a great future for this village which he thought would someday be a thriving city, but he seems to have had no prevision of the colossal growth of the metropolis or he would doubtless have sold his thousands of acres here and kept his hundreds there."
The town of Jefferson was renamed to Watkins by his wife Cynthia after his death.
He had at least two brothers: Charles and John.
