YOUNG WOMAN KILLED AT STATION WHEN SHE TRIES TO BOARD TRAIN
Mrs. Russell Gatchell Meets Tragic Death Monday Morning--Was On HerWay to Meet Husband at Dennison--Head Severed and Body Mangled
Mrs. Russell Gatchell (Clara Blackson), 19, was instantly killed infront of the Pennsylvania station Monday morning at 6:00 o'clock whenshe fell under the wheels of eastbound passenger train No. 141, whichshe was attempting to board for Dennison, Ohio, to see her husband,who has been employed in the railroad yards there. "WIFE, ENROUTE TO HUSBAND IN JAIL, IS KILLED
DENNISON, March 8--Death cheated Russell Gatchell, Dennison, aprisoner in the county jail on a charge of contempt, out of freedom,Monday morning.
His wife, formerly Clara Blackson, 19, while boarding a Panhandlepassenger at Coshocton, enroute to New Philadelphia with money whichwould have released Gatchell, fell under the wheels of the train. Shewas decapitated and both arms severed.
Gatchell, when first informed of the tragedy, denied the girl was hiswife. Later he admitted he had married her several weeks ago.
The Dennison man was lodged in jail by Sheriff Shouk over a week agoafter he had failed to pay $5" alimony still due his first wife fromwhom he was divorced last summer. Last Saturday, the Coshocton girlconferred with county officials and made arrangements to return herewith sufficient money which would pay her husband's debt to commonpleas court.
Death came when the young woman tried to board the train when it wasmoving. Eye witnesses say she grasped the handle of the passengercar, lost her grip and fell under the wheels. Death wasinstantaneous.
Gatchell when told of his wife's sensational death, was visiblyaffected. Other friends will now come to his aid if he hopes toregain freedom." [Transcribed 30 January 2008, SLJuhl, compiler]
